All the hype, all the BS....it will be a crappy fight, as Mayweather will beat the **** out of the smaller one dimesional Pacquiao.....they only thing making this fight a big fight is the ******s who think Pacquaio actually can box and has a chance.....

As Larry Merchant said years ago about Jose Ribalta when he was about to fight Mike Tyson.....He said , "Ribalta's chances are slim and none, and slim left town.".....same applies to Pacquiao.

Hard to say because boxing is in a different social position. Up to Ali, it was very much a stage for the black American civil rights fight.

I consider Pac vs PBF in this era (the PPV era) just below the Holyfield-Tyson match in regards to mainstream appeal. In regards to boxing history, Leonard vs Hearns.

It is nowhere close to any of Ali's fight because those where both had a large mainstream and boxing historic significance.

Hard to compare to anything before the 1960s like Schmeling, Louis, Johnson, etc fights. As their social context was different.

This isn't Tennis. Where are you drawing the line between modern and pre-modern?

i think this out does everything, irelandathebest shout of Jack Johnson vs James Jeffries is spot on because as crimson says it was different times. ppv numbers without a doubt this will smash through the roof. both fighters are at there peak, not one fighter at their peak with the other 4/5 years past theirs. the world we live in today more countrys/people have acsess to fighters through the internet/more tv channels(24/7)/mags etc... as a rule of thumb heavyweight superfights fights will always get joe bloggs excited but both these fighters are well known to the non boxing public. i would say the biggest fight period.

It's not bigger in box office terms than Holyfield-Tyson or Lewis-Tyson. Maybe not even bigger than ODLH-PBF. In boxing terms is another matter. Probably it's the biggest since Chavez-Whitaker.

Hmm partially agree with you. I think it has a good chance to be bigger than ODLH vs PBF, PPV buys wise. Chavez vs Whitaker? That is actually a good comparison, though PBF and Pac are closer to their peak than Chavez and Whitaker where, IMHO. Also, I can't remember if they both where #1 and #2 in the P4P list.

    Good stuff.

in terms of buzz and anticipation, I think Tyson/Holyfield II and Tyson/Lewis were bigger. Regarding Tyson/Lewis, I remember Manny Steward saying(and he was right) that alot of people still thought of Tyson of old which appealed to alot of folks. Plus, add to the fact the drama that took place regarding which states would license Tyson and allowing for him to fight in the first place.
