http://www.eastsideboxing.com/forum/showpost.php?p=6720953&postcount=7 Yes he had two poor showings (against Coleman & Griffin) but he proved that his Pride GP belt wasn't a fluke. When this guy is at the top of his game (and when stamina isn't an issue)...He's one of the most dangerous in mma's LHW division. Keep in mind , he had to beat Overeem & Arona the same night (and he annihilated them both) He actually had the hardest road to the belt. For the GP , he had to beat: Quinton Jackson (ex LHW ufc champ & pride contender) Rogerio Nogueira Alistair Overeem Ricardo Arona... All contender caliber.... he owned 3 of them in the 1rst round. Machida is another huge name on his victim list (also owned in the 1rst)..
Meh, he lost to Forrest. He got lucky today with that shot to the temple. j/k.. no doubt he is one tough SOB at 205
Shogun was def most impressive. he put away any doubts of the first fight being a fluke and made Machida look ordinary in the rematch, credit to him. What surprised me most is that he fought Machida as if he has seen his style many, many times before and as if there is no puzzle to solve. He took away Machida's ability to control distance and had better timing, accuracy, and speed.
No one ever thought it was a fluke. The man was a monster. Anyone who watched Griffin and Coleman fights could see he had absolutely no stamina. Don't matter if you are a Ferrari, if you got no gas in the tank then you won't beat a Mini! Simple as.
I don't know if anybody else noticed but Shogun stopped throwing bombs on Machida a split second before the referee stepped in. It's as if he knew Machida was done and didn't want to inflict more harm. If this is true then I've got nothing but respect for Shogun. Am I seeing this was one right?
The only recent fight that comes to mind is Marquardt-Maia. I imagine that it is REALLY hard to stop before the referee comes in just because you are in the heat of the moment and it isn't always easy to tell how much damage you have actually done. It just shows that behind all of the ferocity, Shogun is in complete control.
I clocked that and that act of mercy really impresses me. Mousasi does it too. It's great that someone so vicious can switch back to merciful so quickly. He saw Machida was out and stopped.
