hey guys im new to boxing so go easy on me. i've read the philly shell is quite a bad idea for southpaws. what if i use my usual peek-a-boo, but while against the ropes do the mayweather shoulder roll? as of now i can't see a problem with it, but that may be because i don't know a lot about boxing mechanics lol.

You or the other guy is southpaw? either way its not smart nor easy. there are times when u can line up a southpaw and roll, but if ur fighting anyone who knows what they're doing its just not smart

    Problem for a south paw.

You are rolling away from the left hand and into the right.

you said you are new to boxing so perhaps you should learn the basic defensive manoevers first, there are very few in the world capable of using this style of defence effectively so i reckon you might struggle to incorporate it into real competition

How are you rolling into the right? You do open up your side for their right hand but I think that's better than an orthodox on orthodox shoulder roll where you open up your side for their left, for an orthodox fighter the left hook is gonna be more natural than throwing looping rights as you would throw against a southpaw using the manouver. I'm a southpaw who uses the shoulder roll quite often and I find it effective, it totally neutralizes the opponents left and then it's just a matter of catching and parrying the opponents right which is no problem.

once again, you need to experiment for yourself during sparring/training. if you have a peek a boo style, you shouldn't be on the ropes, though.

I'm from philly and this is how my trainer trains me, and he's OLD school. I can't imagine fighting any other way, I love it cause it came naturally to me. Others struggle with it and get straight aired-out in the process of learning... If they don't leave the gym after repeated beatings they usually develop their own rendition of it.

It's possible I know southpaws who use it very effectively and I've seen it done.

just keep ur hands up bro

    ill give u 4 reasons

    1. when u start out u will get hit alot. hands up means ur face wont get smashed.
    2. hands up is EXCELLENT conditioning for ur shoulders and arms
    3. hands up will make u snap out ur punches and will help u hide ur right shoulder
    4. hands up helps avoid injury. u are firing straight punches, rather than punching upwards which creates an awkward angle for ur rotator.

once u can survive and master hands up ur body will be ready to adapt to a new stance and ur brain will know what to do when u are on the backfoot and need 2 defend

It is always good to make a nice wide target for your opponents power hand, hahaha!

As a southpaw you will be facing mostly orthodox fighters. That means for you to shoulder roll you would put your body square for a hook or leave you with you front hand down not defending a jab.

I would just throw a crap jab at your lead shoulder to get you to roll left then throw a bomb of a hook at you. If you were faster I would throw a straight. If you were faster or after I did it once I would feint to get you to roll left then back right and throw an overhand-ish hook... Then you would go back to a high guard. :)

There is a reason Mayweather uses the high guard against southpaws. The same reason you should use a high guard against orthodox fighters. You should first study why it works and then you will see why, as a southpaw, you can't do it.

I've given it a crack, i'd advise not to man i've been dropped twice being a southpaw and thinking i'm freakin' Mayweather, i sodded that off not worth it, it's painful.

I use the shoulder roll as a southpaw but just to mix it up really, to make it work I try to keep my front foot on the outside of my opponents right foot to avoid his right, then his jab really is useless cos im catchin it on my shoulder (hope u understand) usually southpaws keep their front foot on the outside of an opponents left foot but if you did this while using the half guard/should roll you're way to open to lead right hands

I dont use it too often but does work against less experienced boxers

if ur opponent is any good and ur not floyd mayweather, a stiff jab is gonna land on your face and hurt alot. you ain't catching **** on your shoulder when the guys on the inside hammering ur body.
