Anybody think this kid can continue moving up the pole. I know he has to face much more talented opponents but at least he's fighting back in his home town (a good start). What do you guys think. And for those not to versed in Mr. Jacobs take a read: http://www.kidsringsideseats.blogspot.com/
I seen him fight once or twice, talented fighter based on what I seen so far. Hopefully that talent will still be there when he starts fighting more higher caliber boxers. Who is he fighting next by the way?
He's fighting another bum of the month club by the name of Juan Astorga. Astorga is 31 years old with a "distinguished" record of 14-4-1 Yeah, Jacobs has a nasty right-hand and loves the body but has plenty to grow. Agreed! P.S. Dig the Liquid Swords avatar. One of the best albums!
Astorga is horrible. I can't believe anyone booked him again. John Duddy knocked him out with the first body shot he threw, and then Astorga basically just quit. I understand why they want to get Jacobs in there with a light touch - he's been out for almost a year with hand problems - but this seems too light to me. Anyway, I've always been high on Jacobs and I think he has the potential to be a pound for pound level fighter. He's a lot like Chad Dawson to me, at least in that he'll probably never get the credit he deserves because his style isn't that flashy and he doesn't go for the knockout. But I do think he has more natural talent than a lot of guys who have gotten very far recently, like Taylor and Pavlik. Also, he's just not a people person. I was at a local show a while back and a bunch of pro fighters where there - Paulie, Jacobs, a few of the Cubans, etc. Paulie and the other guys were hamming it up with the crowd, taking pictures, giving autographs and generally being social. Jacobs just sat in his seat, got up for a few minutes to give an interview, and seemed legitimately disturbed whenever someone walked over him to say hi or wish him luck. He just doesn't have the personality for stardom, and I wonder how he's going to handle it if he does get the limelight at some point.
Hmm, interesting point. I've only seen him a handful of times, and never in person, but given his general demeanour I could totally see this trait. To me, he seems like a very, very solid prospect, and I would have liked to have seen him step up his competition by now. Although of course I understand the deal with the hand injuries which prevented the step-up. My concern is that he'll always have hand problems, and as a result always be held down by those problems. At any rate, I'm looking forward to seeing him on Saturday.
I'm not quite as high on Jacobs as you are. I think he is a very good prospect and think he'll have a good pro career. But I don't see him making the same type of impact of a fighter like Dawson. I see Jacobs being a top guy in his division but not quite a pfp fighter. To me he is good but not great in any areas. He needs a little more pop, especially if he moves up to 68 or 75. He has good handspeed but not on the level of a Dirrell or Dawson. His fundamentals are solid but he seems a bit too stiff in the ring. I see a good fighter but not elite from Jacobs but I could be wrong on all of that. As for his fight with Astorga, yeah its a weak opponent and a step backwards for him but I'm alright with it. He fought about a month ago and is back in the ring again. It just seems like he's getting some rounds in on an off-tv bout. Then when you consider his recent lay-off then I don't see a problem with his opponent. If he's still fighting guys like Astorga in his next couple fights then I see a problem but I see Jacobs upping his competition level in his next fights so this is just a stay busy situation.
All great points. Thanks for the exchange of opinions. I myself like Jacobs a lot but didn't know much about his personality (which isn't pivitol for a stellar career but helps nontheless). The hand issues on the other hand could be a big issue but it's not like we haven't seen hand injuries as a problem with other fighters before. Anyway, either way you dissect it, Jacobs has a lot to prove and much more work to put in if he wants to make a name for himself. Good discussion and enjoy this weekend's fights. http://www.kidsringsideseats.blogspot.com/
Also he seems a bit sensitive to criticism, i saw a fight of his where he was interviewed by Atlas (post fight)and he did not seem to take to the constructive criticism of Atlas, not that he was arrogant or dismissive but he jokingly put across his own opinion(defensively) on what Atlas was talking about, nothing major but i thought maybe there might be something in that to regarding the personality of the fighter. He does have talent and i hope he does well, good luck to him.
