What if Larry Holmes had fought Greg Page in 1984?

Love him or hate him every time he had to dig deep to win he has done so.

 

Source? Coetzee was throwing and often landing rights with gay abandon right to the very end.

 

It could've gone either way, but the way Greg was going in 1984, he was having problems with Don King, and was not the most dedicated fighter to training.So I'm going with Larry on a split verdict.

 

Page arguably had a similar level of natural talent and ability, but I think Holmes would have flicked jabs at him all night and cautiously outworked him.

 

Larry would outbox Greg. Larry was just a little better than everyone in the 1980s and it showed. The Spinks fight was a case where Spinks was an elite and whether people think Holmes was older, he was still bigger and still active enough to that point. I think Spinks beat him legit. Which even in 1985 was a tough assignment.

 

I think Page could win at that time if he was as hungry (no pun intended) as he was against Coetzee. Page should be super motivated to go after IBF champion Holmes. Holmes was clearly slipping and almost lost to Carl Williams shortly thereafter.

If Page is lackadaisical at all, Holmes wins a decision.

If Page is super focused, he wins a decision.

 

Yeah but he knocked Coetzee cold. Coetzee was very highly thought of.

Timing is everything.

He wasn't stepping up against Bey. He was outhustled in a big upset.

He did step up against Coetzee and get the job done.

Then, he was fat and unmotivated again, against Tubbs.

Page would be challenging IBF champion Holmes. He should be motivated, just as he was incredibly motivated against Coetzee.

 

Page was overrated garbage. Holmes takes over after a couple feeling out rds and then proceeds to start beating the #### out of him en route to a tko victory.
