Puerto Rico Has Turned Out An Incredible Number of Champion Fighters

Yes "p4p" they have a lot of great boxers but I think Cuba has the best boxers in the world. How many great Champions would come out of Cuba if Castro wasn't such a **** head?

Puerto Rico IS a boxing culture….when I started in boxing, we had as many of us on the amateurs as we had on our baseball leagues, sport is cultivate on all of us from a young age…as I mentioned before, my father box in the Army as a HW, he was a huge enthusiastic of boxing and the history of boxing, once I was old enough I was going with him to the fights…

There’s no country in the world that has turned out more amateur medalist or professional title holders per capita like Puerto Rico…it is no even close…Cuba has some great boxers through their history, but Cuba is territory wise, 7 or 8 times bigger than Puerto Rico and population is like 10 fold bigger….we are proud of our boxing heritage…and it will continue ahead…We have produce ATG’s like Carlos Ortiz , Wilfredo Gomez and Wilfred Benitez…..IBHOF like Sixto Escobar, Jose Chegui Torrez as many others….

The biggest rivalry in boxing in Mexicans v. Puerto Rican and every time you have a match like this one it is major news…..

This rivalry started by in 1934 WHEN Sixto Escobar KO Baby Casanove in the 9th for the Bantanweight Title….

 

Are those 48 all born and raised in PR or does it include PR Americans? I'm not trying to start a heriditary debate, I'm just curious.

 

Makes me wonder why I never went pro being half Puerto Rican half Cuban.:think

 

Guys, come on. The ams are not the pros. There are tons of great amateur fighters who didn't make it big in the pros, and nowadays with the pitty-pat scoring system I think it would matter even less. Don't start counting all of Cuba's medals and saying that they'd all have been title belts too.

 

Took the words right out of my mouth. Juan Carlos Gomez beat Vitali Klitscko as an amatuer. I'd like to see them go at it as pros

if i remember correctly when cotto fought pinto he wore trunks with the 50 pr champions, and afterwards said he was happy to be #51

While there is no telling how many Cuban top amatuers would have found success in the pros, there is no question that we have missed out on some good PR vs. Cuba and Mexico vs. Cuba battles in the pro ranks due to The Beard's actions.
