diego corrales vs jose luis castillo I - possibly the greatest fight of all time but corrales never won another fight again after that and died 2 years of that fight; castillo won the rematch by a cheat however began a slow and sad decline afterwards
well yeah his fighting spirit was gone but benn was just as beat up and gerald was in that fight...torn muscles in the neck, broken jaw, shadow on the brain, etc etc..fights after that he deteriorated into an uncoordinated brawler...sad to watch
I always thought that the previous fight to the Paret bout was the one that took its toll on Gene; the war that he had with Florentino Fernandez where he broke his right elbow yet finished the fight. I remember Gene saying that he couldn't answer his cornermen after the injury because if he had opened his mouth he would have thrown up from the pain he was in. During the Paret fight I remember Don Dunphy remarking that as the fight was progressing Gene didn't seem to have as much steam in his punches. During his prime Gene Fullmer could go all night long without letting up. By the time Tiger got to him he had lost alot of the endurance and stamina that were once in his repertoire. So one has to wonder if the result against Dick Tiger would have been different with the Gene Fullmer of 1959 who stopped Carmen Basilio in 14 rounds. It's always fun to speculate.
Robert Quiroga-Kid Akeem Anifowoshe Kid Akeem nearly died after their gruelling classic and Quiroga was never the same afterwards either. He won a couple of fights unimpressively before losing his title and a further fight before retiring. Tragically Kid Akeem died in his native Nigeria after allegedly taking up boxing again despite the brain injuries he suffered in the fight and Quiroga was later murdered in San Antonio.
Mike Rossman after the 1st Galindez fight. He looked like crap in his 1st defense against Aldo Traversero, quit in his corner with Galindez bombarding him in their rematch, KO'd by unknown clubfighter Ramon Ranquello, taken to the extremes by clubfighter Luke Capuano and dismantled by Dwight Qawi (I may have my consecutive order messed up without looking at his record but these were all after his greatest night against Galindez the 1st time around). Scartissue
derrick jefferson vs david izon - izon takes what is pretty much a career ending beating from jefferson...jefferson hits him so much that he got winded and izon comes back to stop him..however izon was truly finished even though he fought on some more afterwards
I would strongly disagree with that. I would argue Eubank went on to have at least one finer victory post WatsonII...
Gene Fullmer was a whole lot better than those posters who would have A. Arthur beating him think he was.
..max baer never got over his killing frankie campbell. his brother buddy said often max would cry just thinking about it. ezzard charles was deeply disturbed after he killed sam baroudi . . . had to be talked out of retiring after it happened....he never got over it, though.
