    Challenge issued; challenge accepted.

Mere hours after Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker said he would need to sit down with M-1 Global officials to determine if a potential blockbuster fight between Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem (33-11 MMA, 3-0 SF) and perennial top-ranked fighter Fedor Emelianenko (31-1 MMA, 1-0 SF) might be possible for later this year, those officials have answered the call.

And according to M-1 Global executive Evgeni Kogan, Fabricio Werdum is all that's standing in the way.

"As we've mentioned in the past, Fedor fights whoever is put in front of him," Kogan today told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). "If Overeem is presented by the Strikeforce matchmakers as Fedor's next opponent, then that is who Fedor is going to fight."

After defeating Brett Rogers at Saturday night's "Strikeforce St. Louis: Heavy Artillery" event, Overeem made it a point to call-out the Russian heavyweight in his post-fight speech, as well as again in the evening's post-event press conference.

Coker was quick to point out that such a bout could only be arranged with the blessings of his business partners at M-1 Global, who own Emelianenko's promotional contract.

M-1 Global now seems receptive to that possibility, though Kogan said Emelianenko simply can't focus on that opportunity at this time with a June 26 matchup with Werdum in San Jose, Calif., on the horizon.

"At this point Fedor is choosing not to look past Fabricio," Kogan said. "He is in the most intense part of his training camp in Stary Oskol right now and would like for it to be known that he is focused 100 percent on Werdum.

"The camp considers Werdum a very strong and dangerous opponent – as Fedor's brother found out a few years ago – and all attention is currently on June 26 and San Jose."

So it appears, as least for now, that Emelianenko's Showtime-broadcast bout with Werdum is all that stands in the way of a matchup with Overeem. It's a bout that makes sense for the organization, makes sense for the fans, and apparently now makes sense for M-1 Global.

"I thought [Overeem] won in very impressive fashion," Kogan said. "We respect Alistair as an opponent and think that this would be a great potential matchup."

Wow nice. I'm excited, I am confident Fedor beats Werdum so this fight happens. As it stands now I see Fedor beating Overeem by sub (rear naked choke) in the second round. Its been a few fights since Fedor has choked someone I think it is time.

What I find most distastefull is how Overeem is now in the proverbial drivers seat. Fedor has a potentially difficult bout with Werdum coming up and obviously must not only win but come out injury free inorder to keep this scheduled fight from happening in a timely fashion.

I have alreadly expressed my feelings regarding the current version/incarnation of Overeem and suffice to say this would be horrible for MMA if Fedor were to lose his first fight to a guy like him, under those circumstances. ;)

Easily the most exciting potential heavyweight fight at the moment.

    That and JDS vs Cain.

If Werdum somehow beats Fedor, it really ****s everything up,

Fedor is too sober - that is a good description as nothing seems to rattle Fedor...

"Overeem has been critical in the past of Emelianenko’s management, because they’ve declined his challenges, but not of Emelianenko himself. At one point Vadim Finkelchtein, Emelianenko’s manager, said they had no interest in a fight with Overeem because Emelianenko was above any championship, and dismissed him as a steroid user. That comment was ironic, as Finkelchtein then asked for a fight with Josh Barnett, who has failed three steroid tests during his career.

Overeem also made it clear that his domination of Rogers, whom he outlanded in total strikes 54-1 in the short fight, does not give him any psychological edge against Emelianenko, who struggled vs. Rogers.

“It’s a different fight,” he said. “When Fedor fights me, he’s going to be really sharp. He’s clever. I think he’s too sober. He’s not going to be mentally scared because I beat Brett in three minutes.”

I think again people make too much out of Fedor/Rogers fight. Fedor was being cerebral and feeling Rogers out and Rogers was doing a good job at being relentless so it took alittle bit to figure out Rogers timing. I think that if Fedor didn't bleed no one would have anything good to say about Rogers. People are stupid and equate cuts and blood with losing.

With that said Overeem didn't really give Rogers any chance to get started and tossed him on the ground and pummeled him before Rogers knew what hit him.

This will be a good fight but until fedor actually loses how can you pick against him (unless you are a hater)?

Fedor likes to beat opponents at their own game, ie whatever strengths they might have. In Bretts case it was his striking. one punch KO.

  11. M1 and Fedor never ducked Overeem. Scott Coker decides who fight who and it was made perfectly clear from the beginning that both Fedor and Overeem first fight someone else before squaring off against each other. Overeem was meant to fight Werdum first and Fedor with Rogers before both men face each other. It was Overeem and his management who declined the Werdum fight because of a hand injury (they decided that it was safer to resign with K1 with its bigger gloves). Overeem just filfilled his K1 obligations last month and by that time all of the matchups have been finalised by Strikeforce.

M1 are very much aware of what Overeem is capable of. Overeem has previously fought in an M1 event before and has even been used by Fedor as a sparring partner. M1 knows that Overeem is a dangerous guy and were quietly confident of him destroying Rogers in the first round. Even before the Rogers fight, M1-Global had already started shipping in Hollands top K1 fighters to spar with Fedor.

**** that. The fight doesn't need anymore building. It needs advertising. Overeems been on a streak for a few years now and he came back and dominated Rogers. Fedor is Fedor and he would be coming off of a Werdum win!

Building fights up too much is a big mistake. That's the boxing formula which is code for taking money from the fans for bull**** fights.

Let's see the WAMMA and SF Champ fight!

For the casual fans the fight needs building Overeem hasn't fought in Strikeforce for a long time. Only the hardcore fans really know about him. But im sure during the Fedor Werdum battle they'll be plugging the winner of this fight fights overeem. After that I expect **** loads of advertising :deal

Strikeforce know that if they don't build the fight and it just goes ahead straight away, if Fedor wins then there is no-one for him to fight near Overeems level and the calls for him to go to the UFC will be even louder.

Thats a good point as well. After overeem who's next for Fedor?

I bet there hoping for a close fight (If they do fight) so they can push for the trilogy
