Yeah it is silly. Boxing is one aspect of MMA so obviously a boxer would have a good chance of winning if the fight stayed on it's feet. Just like a pure wrestler would have a good chance against a MMA artist if the fight went to the ground. I pure BJJ guy would have a good chance if the fight went to the ground. A kickboxer would have a good chance if the fight stayed on it's feet. ETC......ETC....... A pointless discussion. Why is it always Boxing versus MMA? Why not wrestling versus MMA, kickboxing versus MMA......etc....etc? Basically the more well rounded you are the more of a chance you have of winning a MMA fight. If you are an expert in one discipline, you still have a chance but the odds are not in your favor.
Legs are less natural weapons? Wow.. Just wow man. You need to see how well Mercer has done against Kickboxers, even ones who are considered to be relatively soft striking.. Feet, shins, knees, fists, and elbows.. They are all very natural weapons. That you are more a purist is cool. We all love boxing here, but some of us recognize it is a specialized sport.. I would expect someone who only ever fights with their hands to be better at that aspect, than someone who fights with everything. It's only natural.. Even if you take the argument in that direction, that legs are not natural weapons.. Well, neither is a sword, or a rifle.. You want to show up to a fight with your fists against either of those?
Pretty much, and to answer your question of, "Why is it always Boxing versus MMA?" Pretty simple answer, really; money. If Brazilian Jiu Jitsu fighters were glorified and held in as high regard, and had the history of boxing then that's the question that would have been asked. Also, boxing has laid the claim to having the best "fighter" in the world. Which we know now to be complete nonsense. It was even then, but people actually thought it was true. What boxing has had, consistantly, is the best puncher in the world. No real question there. But, because of the emergence of Mixed Martial Arts in the public eye and the surge of knowledge in other fighting styles and the practical application relative to boxing (pure boxing) it becomes immediately clear that the claim that boxing has the best fighter is pure nonsense. Absolute nonsense. And that's what alot of boxing guys try to deny despite the overwhelming evidence that directly refute their claims. They hide behind one thing and one thing only. Money. They would test themselves against MMAists, but they want obscene amounts of money. It's a safeguard. Make an unreasonable request otherwise you won't do it. It guarantees that you never have to prove anything and you can keep fighting the verbal war and the "if" I were to then I'd win without ever actually having to prove it and knowing they'll never have to prove it. I like boxing myself, but I'm a realist.
Why would a boxer need to add kicks to his arsenal if boxing was superior?:deal You dig a hole everytime you post ding dong. All you "boxing only" morons go on about a boxer adding more movements to thier arsenal. Guess what? THAT IS WHAT MMA IS ABOUT!!!!!!!!!!! MMA is taking aspects of many arts and combining them. They are 2 different sports man. One is punching and defence, the other is punching, defence, kicks, knees, elbows, jointlocks, takedowns, chokes, slams, submission defence.
I've told this to people as well. The boxer always has a chance seeing how the matches start out on the feet. If the boxer is better at his art than the mma fighter, the mma fighter will get dropped. Add equal levels of skill and the boxer is in for a quick lesson in other means of finishing a fight. Could the mma fighter get caught, sure. But more than likley it won't go down that way everytime. To put it plainly, there is nobody in boxing who could beat Fedor in an MMA fight. Not one! But, they would take him to school in the boxing ring because they focus on one aspect of the fight game. Punching. That is what boxers do, day in, day out.
Because pure boxing fans feel threatened by it so they ALWAYS have to keep bringing it up. I think these discussions should be in the boxing section, its just as much about boxing as it is about MMA why do we get stuck with the repeated ******ation filled threads in the MMA section?
