Oh yea, and of course one could argue that Vitali forced Lewis to retire. Lewis was caught giving interviews a few weeks after the win over Vitali how he feels he still has 1-2 fights in him and he can fight another 12 months or so and how he's talking to Roy Jones Jr.'s people about a big fight. Then Vitali destroyed Johnson in 2 rounds and the WBC mandated an immediate rematch. What did Lewis do? He went into hiding, stopped giving interviews and then retired one day before the WBC threatened to strip him of the belt. There you have it.
I am a fan of Lewis and believe that in a tournament with the best 20 HW's of all time, he would win the most fights. That said, he was lucky against Vitali. Cuts can easily come from glancing blows, not necessarily from hard, accurate punches. Vitali's face looked horrible alright, but the real damage to brain cells in boxing matches is invisible.
Stop this crap Vitaly had a huge cut and was stopped because of it, unfortunate for him but that's how it turned out, the stoppage was correct that cut was bad... A rematch would have been great but no such luck for us...
i dont see the debate on this one. it was a close fight with two huge punchers landing huge punches, both were tireing, and lewis scored a fully justifiable tko.
Lennox proved in the past that he has no problem surrendering alphabet titles if they force him to so something he doesnt want so no youre incorrect there.
isnt it funny though that after all these years he is stil the biggest threat as a contrender if he came back
Then why was Lewis running his mouth after beating Vitali how he feels he still has 1-2 good fights left in him and he felt like he was on a mission? And then he quickly changed his mind as it became clear he had to either rematch Vitali or retire?
Reality check time. Vitali forced Lewis to retire :rofl Lewis was talking about retirement as early as 2000 (after Grant), we got 6 fights and 3 years more, stop bitching. 'Lucky cut'. It was caused by a punch, end of. If that's a lucky punch then EVERY cut in the history of boxing is lucky. Lewis then did what he was supposed to do, work the cut!! BOTH men were breathing heavily by the end of the 5th let alone 6th. Both hit each other with huge bombs, but who was coming on strong in the 6th? Who was coming forward for pretty much the entire fight... Lewis. How often does a champion call it a day at the right time whilst winning against the young upcoming No1 guy in the division? That's exactly what Lewis did.
Lewis by ko/tko, you could go keep bringing this fight up, and argue with with all kinds of scenario's to favour Vitali. But the fact still remains that Lewis' accuracy was deadly. Those weren't lucky punches that opened up those cuts to Vitali. The last remaining rounds would have seen Vitali, picked apart, because Lewis is too good to lose against someone with that kind of restricted vision....
Vitali is so great he lost to an 18.5 stone 37 year old. Having said that, David Haye would not have seen the 3rd round against that Vitali.
i wouldn't say Lewis was shot, just not on top form. Same as Rahman I, Lennox would sometimes not really get going properly. A rematch and Lewis would have brought his A game.
