It is funny how so many people are so sure that this didnt happen, without controversy, because there was no film or photos of the incident. It would be interesting, if someone actually asked Joe Frazier one day, or someone else who might have actually been there, before it is too late. I personally have trouble believing it, and if true, i think it more a case of unprepared Frazier, overexagerated knockdown etc. But i have no knowledge whatsoever and I highly doubt Vito would just make it up for the sake of it, based on nothing so someone at least must have reported it. Until it is disproved otherwise, i think that it has to go in the more likely than not box! If it is true, would it have any effect on the legacy of guys like Ali, Frazier and Foreman himself.
It's also funny how so many on here believe the sub-190 fighters of yesteryear would still do well against the heavies from the 70's and beyond... yet when mention a hard hitting BIG middleweight might have KD'd a small heavyweight in sparring... oh no, never....
I'm gonna be at the wbc night of champions and if Vito or Joe are there I'll be asking about it. Hopefully Vito will give me the story cos I don't really want to ask Joe.
don't worry, if I hear something i'll share. This story has been floating about for a ages now. Can't imagine it myself after seeing the shots Quarry bounced off Joe.
Monzon wasnt some monster puncher at 160. This is a guy who wanted nothing to do with Bob Foster, wasnt as big as Foster and didnt hit anywhere near the same time zone as Foster... who got walked all over by Frazier, and yet some believe Monzon knocked Frazier out?? Joe Frazier would have broken Monzon in half and used him to clean his teeth...
I also see Vito just about every month at the Ring 8 meetings, which takes place every 3rd Tuesday. If he is at the next meeting, I will ask him.
