This is exactly why he should have let it carry on....if the fighter wanted to fight on...and he wasnt jus taking a severe beating and not throwing anything....then stop it by all means.....foreman wanted to carry on....hes a champion....not your average journey man....thats his lifes dedication...he should be given a chance....im glad Arthur Merchate JR gave foreman the chance....and he controlled the whole situation pretty well...and he stopped it at the right time...so stop with the hate....

p.s the corner denied throwing the towel in when the round ended....

The refs and the corners are supposed to protect the fighters since no fighter is gonna stop the fight on their own. The ref should respect the wishes of the corner and end the fight.

WE can even ignore the towel incident and the ref still ****ed up. This fight went on for too long with or without the towel.

The ref was clueless, and you could tell by the way he was telling Foreman to walk it off.:patsch You can't walk off a torn knee. The ref should have got a clue when Forman just kept stumbling and falling. Him letting the fight continue wasn't going to lead into anything other than Forman getting KO'd, and anyone with sense knew it.

I think Mercante just has a great deal of respect for the sport and the fighters. I clearly saw him ask Foreman if he wanted to still fight just as everybody was invading the ring, and he nodded and said yes. He earned his way to the title, Mercante understood that this kid should have every chance to try and keep it. Nobody was seriously injured, the first time Foreman was hit and went down it was stopped...he gave him a little bit more time...I think that's to his credit.

...Foreman wanted to continue, he wasn't being brutalised. Good job by the referee.

The ref did exactly the right thing. He didn't see who threw the towel in, and when he asked the corner did they throw the towel...they said no. And even then, the ref doesn't necessarily have to stop the bout straight away once the towel is in the ring...if he feels the bout can go on, and the boxer isn't taking too much punishment, etc...the bout will go on.

He gave Foreman a great chance to continue and try to somehow retain his belt...Foreman was able to stand on two feet, even if it was apparent it was causing discomfort.

Only those with a barbaric lust for blood would want to see the fight continue.

Personally, I think it probably should of been waved off at the end of the 8th at the latest. It was very obvious that Foreman had no chance of winning. He was well behind on points, his movement was very hindered (and his defence seemed to rely a fair bit on his movement) and any power he had was greatly diminished due to the injury. By letting him continue, they were just needlessly risking him. Somebody (corner, doctor, ref) should of stopped it rather than let the guy be a sitting duck.

Ya -- there have only been about 200 - 300 other fights where the ref let it go after the corner tossed in the towel. **** ya -- take his license:patsch
