Its funny when he fought lennox and Sanders and Danny Williams he fought in America and the crowd cheered and the american writers loved him then he takes 4 years off comes back gets a belt and is active for an old guy with knee problems KO's guys and we say he is boring not interesting for a guy who once had a big following here cant get on hbo hell espn bareley wants him y the turn around
In the Byrd fight Vitali tore his rotator cuff and it required surgery. It was worse than just a dislocated shoulder which is what you said.
I call bull****. Champions are supposed to meet the the best opposition in their division. They haven't. Instead, they have chose to divy up the division and that will KILL their legacy. Keith
The main problem (for me) with his modern career is that Vitali didn't even do a token attempt at paying his dues before a title shot. It was handed to him on a silver platter, while the rest of the division is scrabbling along against local opponents. Whenever you see HBO broadcast from Europe it's obvious, even on the air, how uncomfortable they are. They nearly throw hissy fits, having to wait in line for a post-fight interview - it's <bang!> bad enough when they <bang!> can't get the <bang! bang!> narrative to the way it <bang! bang! bang!> should. Even with such great television as Cotto v. Foreman, the commentary sounded like they were changing gears while going uphill. Besides, even if HBO's opinion mattered overseas, Vitali would still be weeping his way to the bank.
I remember – before V. Klitschko retired him – Lennox Lewis expounded that the Klitschkos only got their ‘’wide exposure’’ because of racism. I like Lennox Lewis, but he’s far too intelligent to really believe that – he’s just a man who can get away with saying it! Since the start of their career, the two brothers have been called ‘’too mechanical’’; ‘’quitters’’ and ‘’monsters’’; but very rarely have they been credited for what they are: two fighters that would have dominated in ANY ANY ANY ANY era…!
Here is a simple example if there are any doubts there is a concerted effort to demean the Ks one need only consider the 'Last Call With Carson Daly' show. Ostensibly an alterna-music/celeb showcase. Mr. Daly interviewed the exciting heavyweight Tor Hamer, prefacing the segment with comments along the lines of; 'boxing is now boring, except maybe for Pacquiao, but boxing is really boring and in really bad shape, especially the heavyweight division, now without Tyson and Holyfield, but there's hope on the horizon' And we go to Tor. Who went to Penn State. Won the NYC Golden Gloves. Feted in the Village Voice. Has won 9 fights. And in just two years will win the heavyweight championship. He's an intellectual fighter. He's charismatic. He's going to win the championship for America. Did I mention he's really, really smart? Watch out you Eastern European commies! You betcha!
I don't think it's that crazy. It's not like he came back with the belt on. Look at the other heavyweight contenders. There are few guys in the division who can compete with Vitali, so it makes sense that he would be top rated when he came back. It's bull**** that Martinez got his belt taken away. That's an entirely different issue though. The circumstances aren't the same.
Xenophobia and racism coupled with a biased media? Hmmm... media has it's influence to be sure, and the yanks are damned good at it, but i think it has more to do with the show he puts on. This "unappreciated" phenomena seems to be cropping up more and more these days and not just in regards to VK. I really think it comes down to the nature of "fans" and what appeals to spectators of blood sports. Are you surprised at the popularity of the Gatti / Ward trilogy? Both guys far from the elite level, yet this trilogy is ranked right up there with the best of them. It's because fight fans like to see a close competetive fight with lots of blood and guts, very few are connosoires of the sweet science and would prefer to watch Mayweather shadow box than a display of courage. So whatever your reasoning for Vk's lack of these kinds of fights ( i.e. Vk is so skilled he makes one of the greatest heavyweight eras look pedestrian or he's a decent fighter in a weak era ) it's the lack of "tv friendly" fights that ultimately tarnish his reputation.
Yeah, I guess I've always had a problem with the "champion emeritus" title, especially since it's so arbitrary. Is Kostya Tszyu still a champion emeritus? I'm vaguely sure that the first time a champion emeritus was declared was in the great sport of checkers. (Wiki was unhelpful in proving my memory right/wrong.) Carson Daly? Seriously? How about trolling some public access shows for quotes, too?
Watch how Vitali staggered Lewis! Lewis was ready to go, even Max said it, and Angelo Dundee said that Vitali was cheated out of the WBC title that night. Tell Lewis to get some balls and fight Vitali. I want to see that fight, but Lewis is still running. Good think Lewis' people had the fight stopped. Lewis has a badly broken nose, and I mean bad!
