I have this cool book that has the daily training regime of many of the boxers throughout history . Very few of them lift weights , if they do it's mostly shoulder, neck and back stuff.. And lighter weights with more repetition

If you do weights and you lose flexibility and endurance you wont be as good of a runner. Building lots of muscle means you also burn lots of oxygen which reduces endurance. Building muscle in the wrong way reduces flexibility which will make you run slower.

Sprinters and any professional athlete might do resistance training, but this has nothing to do with lifting weights. Show me what weights they are lifting and prove me wrong.

That's a very short, nearly non-existent list. Not because the fighters that lift weights are quick, but because fighters that lift weights don't last in boxing (legs being the exception). Now...MMA? Different story.

I'm not sure if this is what caused him to be ruined. But if it did then it was because he did it the wrong way.

Are you serious? That's a staple of any sprinters workout, squats, deadlifts, bench are done by all sprinters. Tennis players lift weights, athletes in all sports lift weights or do resistance training. Whitaker lifted weights aswell. Lifting weight doesn't equate to building lots of muscle mass, educate yourself.

And flexibility isn't a key component of being a good runner, infact it is detrimental to your power if you are too flexible.

that was the point i was trying to make.. that hardly any boxers lift a lot of weights and the ones that do they do light weights with a lot of reps... so if slow boxers and fast boxers do the same amount of weight lifting you cant attribute the weights as being the cause of the slow ones

Things that people have said that are completely wrong:

    1) Lifting makes you inflexible - No it doesn't. Lifting without properly stretching after and also working flexibility can make you inflexible. And putting on huge amounts of bulk (the sort that you don't get without years or working specifically towards that goal) can interfere with flexibility. But generally lifting weights improves maximal flexibility since it strengthens muscles so they are less likely to tear when stretched.

    2) Lifting makes you bulky - Muscle needs to be properly fed to grow. Most boxers, because of their need to watch their weight, do not eat nearly enough to experience extreme hypertrophy, unless they are going up in weight, in which case building up a base of muscle is a good thing.

    3) Sport specific resistance training > generic resistance training - weight lifting is meant to safely build a base of core strength with sport specific plyometrics teaching the body to properly use that strength. The idea of "sport specific resistance training" is silly. What would be a boxing specific resistance exercise that provides the same benefits as deadlifts or squats without also greatly increasing the risk of injury?

Athletes in just about every sport in the world do weight training as a supplement to their sport specific training. Michael Phelps started weight lifting before the Beijing games. He put on 14 pounds of muscle and still looked lean and maintained his flexibility.

Sprinters lift. Football players lift. Tennis player lift. Wrestlers lift. Baseball players lift. Everyone lifts.

Building up whole body strength through weight training is a great way to reduce injury and prepare the body for the intensity of competitive sport, and it does this safely. It also increases maximal strength which the athlete then learns to use through sport specific exercises.

    that is utter bull****

if you lift to gain bulk then you do, bulking doesn't happen by accident and it doesn't happen overnight

this guy is one of the strongest guys at the defranco gym and look how high he box jumps

jumping has nothing to do with flexibility?

pause the video at 8 seconds

you're telling me you can lift your legs up to your neck without having amazing flexibility?
