Hey I'm fairly new to boxing. Not sure I'm ever going to actually take the step of fighting, but before I take the step of paying for coaching, I think I'd really benefit from any sites that offer some worthwhile background on the technical principles of boxing. Videos would be great too. Can any of you more experienced boxing types who know their way around the internet help me on this? Thanks in anticipation of your assistance!
Nah dude you're better off learning it firsthand from a knowledgeable coach. There's so much you can miss using videos, and if you get bad habits and do end up going to a gym then it'll take forever to correct them. I'm a big fan of just going to a gym from day one.
^^^^ that.. When you're just learning from a video, you have nobody to tell you the small technical things you're doing wrong..And it's very easy to pick up little bad habits then will put you at a disadvantage once you do go to a gym, such as dropping your hands after you punch and stuff
Thanks guys, you're frank responses are appreciated. I accept now that I need to bite the bullet and visit the gym. There is one nearby, so I'll give it a go. One final thing, I did find a site after my post that seems helpful. It's called www.myboxingcoach.com and has lots of videos and stuff. Is this site something I should bear in mind as I'm learning, or should I avoid all on-line resources like the plague? Sorry for the continued imposition on your time, but thanks in advance (again!)
My view would be to go to the gym, and do not learn stuff directly off the site, however as you're learning in the gym maybe take a few tips from the videos on it, but wait till you have learned things by a propper trainer first, and are getting the hang of it
Agreed. And remember, no one will care if you're out of shape, uncoordinated, and can't box. No one can when they first step into the building. You don't have to turn up in shape and ready to enter the ring, that's what the gym is there for.
Good luck and totally agree with the other posters. Find a coach and ask everyone you meet questions. It will very slowly start to piece together. Hold in there because it can take a while. My first bit of advice - get someone to show you how to throw a jab! And practise it...a lot...!
Young guys are more modern in their approaches and in many cases know just as much if not more. Do yourself a favour speak to everyone who wants to assist you. You'll prob get 2/3rds bull **** but if your smart enough to work out whose speaking sense and not deviating too much from the foundations then you may do well.
