No need for a flame war but Hopkins is probalby one of the smartest fighters ever, and i'm not a big Hopkins fan. I dont think Toney was considered a top notch smart fighter, but in Toney's prime he was VERY VERY slick don't forget Toney was 44-0-1 when he got humiliated by Jones jr. Toney at the time had wins over Mccallum, Michael Nunn when Nunn was undefeated and a win over Iran Barkley.

Alot of people keep saying that Jones jr. has never been in the ring with someone as fast as Calzaghe and so and so on, but seem to ignore the other way around. Calzaghe hasn't been in the ring with anybody NEARLY as athletic, and fast as a PRIME Roy Jones. Nobody knows how either one of them would react. How exactly would Calzaghe react with someone in the ring that is faster than him and hits a hell of alot harder than him. Also at 168 Jones had sick power in both hands. In Jones prime he was very good countering on the inside also.

Thats a tough call to make between the three of them, Hops/Toney/Joe C. I think Joe C is a great great fighter and probably 1 or 2 big fights from breaking into the top 50 ATG list (IMHO). I would have liked to see him take these bigger fights earlier in his career though. Realize also where you said something similar would happen to Cal for showboating like Toney. Well Toney got KD by a "not that great of a punch" and Toney has one of the HARDEST Chins/head probably ever. If Jones would catch Joe with the same 'Chicken Punch' he might have been doing the Zab 'Chicken Dance'... Its all speculation though. and yea Hops and Toney both took Jones 12 but your talkin about 2 guys that have seen canvas 1 time in there careers combined. I've never seen either one of those 2 guys really hurt at all. So its no shock at all they took Jones all the way. Good response though you seem to have a little more intellect then some on here. helluva fight though and we'll never know

You'll never get a true answer why it never happened. Jones Jr fans will say Joe C wouldn't come to the states and Joe C fans will say Jones Jr ducked Joe. I do have to say though that eventhough Joe C has every right to stay and fight in his own country, he probably hurt his pockets and legacy quite a bit by not coming to the states. I mean look what Hatton has done for himself and Hatton isn't on the same level as any fighter mentioned in this entire thread. If Joe C would have came to the states early in his career who knows where he might be at. but to each there own if he enjoys fighting there he's a grown man and can stay there. I just think in the long run when history looks back say 10-20 yrs from now Joe isn't going to get the respect he deserver because he didnt fight here and fight bigger fights through out his career.

I don't understand how the Kessler fight makes this much of a difference. This fight occured in the latter part, if not the end of Joe's career. It shows that he's a durable fighter, gave him the quality of "greatness." Let's look at the fights in Joe's prime to decide.

How's about Joe moves up to heavyweight, beats the champion (well, Ruiz) and comes back to down in weight to fight Kessler. There's no way he'd be where he's at now.

Roy's career began to decay as soon as he decided to go back down from heavyweight. It was really a dead end. But in his prime, he was untouchable.

The poll is 70% in favor of Roy, yet the most vocal are those who argue for Joe, slandering Roy in the process.

Well I wouldn't be surprised if Hopkins priced himself out, wouldnt be the first time. But you say why bother, well sometimes if you want the recognition that you want and deserve you have to make it happen. Joe could've made other fights happen that would have gone along ways on his resume. hell a win over the likes of Glen Johnson (We know Johnson would except) then wins over guys like Griffin, and maybe even a Harding. the other greats around would have to pay attention and the fights would be made eventually and Joe would've made more money that way then what he's made now. The way I see it is if Joe would've came here and had fights with say Hops "even if he didnt get his fair cut" Toney, maybe Nunn, McCallum, and couple others even if say he split fights with Hops and Toney beat Nunn, McCallum. he might not have been undefeated but he would have a ton of money and have wins over Toney, Hops, Nunn, McCallum, Lacy, eubank, and Kessler. I think he should have came over here and took a couple smaller fights, got his name out some and then America would have embraced him the same way they do Hatton. Joe would have made a ton of money

I totally agree that Calzaghe doesn't get enough respect due to the fact that he's not American. I mean, that's obvious. But what we're talking about is prime to prime Jones and Calzaghe.

Yes, Toney and Hopkins. Those are two pretty ****ing good fighters to have outclassed.

However, when was Calzaghe's prime? We have Eubank, Reid, Sheika, Veit, Mitchell, Lacy over a period of, what, almost ten years? Who did Joe fight in his prime? Is Lacy his prime? Is it Veit?

Over ten years, Jones has: Hopkins, Toney, Byrd, Griffin, Hill, Woods, and Ruiz.

Their resume are rather comparable, though I would say Roy's is somewhat stronger.

Basically, I would favor Roy's tremendous power and speed over Joe's unflagging skill and heart. It wouldn't be easy for either.

RJJ holds W's over a PRIME BHop, a PRIME James Toney, a victory (while in obvious decline) over a pretty good Tarver, and beat a HW titleholder.

As good as JC MIGHT be, he can't claim these types of achievements, and never will. It's hard to take him over a PRIME Jones--though I probably would've been rooting for him to win, being I really disliked RJJ's no-risk style of fighting.
