arthur mercante jr on cotto/foreman? i was just watching it and after foreman fell the 2nd time in the 7th round arthur called the dr. but foreman said he was alright then at the end of the round mercante was calling out the dr. but the dr. never appeared and foreman said he was alright
because there are so many pussies on here...... they think if you get a headbutt and have a cut you should quit...any injury you should quit immediatley rather than risk injury.....no one has any balls anymore....
The last thing you do is ask a fighter who might be hurt if he wants to continue. Because if he’s any kind of fighter at all, he’ll say yes
The fighter couldn't continue fighting on one leg, unlike some headbutt cut, and when the corner tried to stop the fight, he simply refused, allowing the fighter to fight a fight he could not win in any possible way, and risk further injury to his health and career. No fighter wants their career put in jeopardy over an injury, no opponent wants to knock out a limping man instead of continuing to face a game opponent, no trainer wants to see their fighter get hurt for no good reason, and no fans want to see an elite fighter and a one-legged fighter drag on the inevitable without any real competitive testing going on.
Danny Williams knocked out an opponent with a dislocated shoulder. Foreman even with a limp leg caught Cotto with some good shots. You never know what can happen in boxing. These fighters may never get another shot if you stop the fight.
I mean it's good that he check who threw the towel before he stopped the fight but come on, foreman look like he couldn't continue. I give him props for sucking it up but that fight should have been stopped.
If there appears to be any hope that Foreman can win it then so be it let him continue for some more. But there wasn't. So it should have been stopped.
Joe Grier actually said "I did" when the round ended, and Mercante just walked away. Maybe the first time, but after he fell AGAIN? Come on, that was some sloppy ****. Fighting with one hand impaired and fighting with one leg completely useless are two different things. Movement was a key element to his game, and legs are where you get your leverage for punches. Foreman was not a power-puncher by any means, and he was not going to win that fight. Not even with the good leg. So there was no reason to let that fight continue after he had fallen about 4 times. Check who threw in the towel? Sure. Disregard the corner to see a losing injured feather-fisted champion further push his luck by fighting with a torn ligament against a seasoned fighter? Nah. Not a good decision.
you shouldn't quit unless is life threatening where whether its a knee, back, jaw injury you should fight through it malignaggi fought cotto with a broken jaw for about 8 rounds, biggs fought tyson w/one arm
that knock was coming then or later it was just a matter of time cause before the injury cotto had hit foreman with a body shot and you could just see that foreman did not like it and furthermore the pressure was getting to him
Mercante didn't do too badly. He gave Foreman his one last hurrah by allowing him to continue after the second slip. But idealy I think it should have been stopped late in the 7th. Cotto was pouring it on, Foreman's game plan was gone and he was simply getting out gunned. Allowing the fight to continue after the towel came in i'm not too sure about. Sure he doubted that it came from Foreman's corner, but regardless, both fighter thought it was over. Both had trained mentally and physically for many months for this fight. When the towel came in I can just imagine their sudden release of enormous amounts of pressure. Asking them to continue after that can put an unhealthy amount of pressure on a man. Going to the cards after that wouldn't have been a bad choice. Either way, he wasn't as bad a ref as many make out.
