Carl Froch's comments: "First and foremost, as a spectator it was like watching paint dry. I recorded the fight to my TV box and can honestly say I will be recording over it. Ward has skills but they don't pay the bills. People tune in to be entertained, but that jab and maul style, leaning in constantly with his bony head, holding and hitting was very tedious to watch." I agree that it wasn't an entertaining fight to watch, but at the same time you have to admire Ward's skills and his ability to make Green look hopeless (however awful he was). Yes his style throwing punches and immediately following them up by getting close and encouraging the clinches, will not make him that mega-star his talent warrents. But I guess you still have to appreciate his boxing ability, however boring it may be.
He's right, fights like that don't bring new fans to boxing nor do they please hardcore boxing fans. Facts are facts. The fight was ****ing horrible.
I would agree, but that being said, he faught how he needed to fight to get the edge he needed to get, to ultimately destroy his opponent. He didn't fight that way against Kessler, he worked from the outside initially and busted him up with a good jab and lead rights, so this was more the exception than the rule (in my opinion). Not sure it would be fair to call this "his style" as much as a testiment to his versitility. The reason the fight was horrible to watch had more to do with Green and his inability to muster enough heart to put up a fight, more than Wards style.
Ward would give Froch a major lessoning in leading with the head, hitting and holding, pushing, wrestling, and stinking the arena out. But yes, Ward would likely win.
I've actually found a highlight video of the Ward/Green fight on YouTube. Enjoy! Oh c'mon how was the fight boring to watch when there was action throughout it? Ward beat him in a one-sided manner and had the momentum always in his favor. Froch does always bring the fight to his opponent but how will he respond to a person who can take alot and dish alot and has ko power plus a high guard?(Abraham reference)
It was great to watch on Ward's part and he beat the man convincingly. Being a boxer, you want to do that but I do agree it was painfully annoying watching that fight knowing that Green had a chance in a lifetime and didn't try to win. Same with Clottey*sigh*.
If you thought that fight had action throughout, then fair enough that's your opinion. I'm glad you enjoyed it. But me personally, as well as countless others on here, found large proportions of that fight a little boring. There were at times when Ward landed some beautiful shots and nice combinations on the inside, and made the viewer appreciate his skill and sharpness. But as a whole, it won't be breaking in to the top 10 fights of the year, not even in this dreary 2010. But as another poster has suggested, Green didn't help much either.
So basically what Froch is saying is " I will get my ass handed to me in a long boring manner IF I ever reach a level to be able to fight Ward"........:rofl:rofl:rofl:rofl
Ok I did overexaggerate about the "action throughout" part but....the fight isn't as bad as people make it I mean Ward threw like 41 combinations so there was action in it but not throughout and I agree with everything in your post that I put in bold.
As much as I despise Froch, I wholeheartedly agree; what I watched last night was not a boxing match but a MMA match. The fact that fans support and praise the tactics that Ward employed - like excessive clinching, pushing your opponent with your head and general freakin' WRESTLING - is a sign that a great deal of people that watched are just "fight" fans and not BOXING fans. If Ward was as great a boxer as he's been made out to be he should have beaten that drained plug Green without turning the fight into the ugly spectacle it was.
