i Signed up for a month(to try out) a boxing/muay thai gym, last week ,and i went 2 days ago for the first time.

First the gym looks more like its mma with the stuff they do because they dont have rings just matts ,and the boxing section dont have a speed bag or ceiling to floor bag.Just heavy bags ,the upper cut bag,,mitts, body guard ,gloves etc etc

But one of the fighters there said they go to other locals gyms every week or so and spar there.

Any way the main trainer was basically showing the basics to three new comers including me at the same time, which was kind of weird ,as his assistant ran drills with 4 other guys.
The thing that threw me off was The trainer was rushing alot of it ,maybe to get the basics down,i mean i personally felt i got better info from the tube

he didnt tell us how to position the body,i mean one kid was a square target and the trainer was telling him good job ,and i was looking at him like i could of counterd that right there, it was mainly drop your elbows to your waist and protect your self, bend your knees, and boom we went right in to the one tWo combos ,then 1,2,3, and pivoting, sitting ,finding the range, pushing off the back foot, and then basic mitt n heavy bag drills,

I got a few questions ,is it normal for every trainer to start every new comer with the old shcool traditional boxing stance?

i mean i consider myself a fast fighter who fights on the outside and i drop my left hand alot, but being told to keep your left hand up even when your not at target distance? how did Rjj ,ali, floyd etc ,master that craft,im sure every one has to start at the basics and then you find your style?

another thing he didnt explain is when i was hitting the bag working on a 3 and 4 punch combo ,he would not critique it ,maybe every few minutes ,a "just like that" or dont be so aggresive, small suggestions,or comments.

I dono what you guys think?

and i was told my jab has pop but not my left hook ? its my first day

Gotta know the basics before you come up with your own style. Works with any sport really.

its your first day and your complaining about the trainer? he was probably showing the basics and giving you a quick go at everything..he's probably use to kids like you coming in thinking they are pro and quitting after a couple of months

"i mean i consider myself a fast fighter who fights on the outside and i drop my left hand alot, but being told to keep your left hand up even when your not at target distance? how did Rjj ,ali, floyd etc ,master that craft,im sure every one has to start at the basics and then you find your style?"

and you consider yourself a fast fighter when uve been to a gym once?

@ the last 2 comments,i didn't walk in to the gym with a chip on my shoulder thinking i was a pro,I addressed the trainer and gave him my run down ,if you read the title ,i said "New gym" ive trained in 52 blocks constellation and i have been to a boxing gym before during open work outs ,never 101 with a trainer.A old school trainer i worked with 3-4 years ago showed me alot of things but again all trainers have there own ways of teaching.

And dfh lol if i was to fight some one ,one on one i would naturally go in my comfortable stance which is my left hand low,and my right one at the cheek,im not calling myself roy jones im far from him,but for every fight i have had in my life ,ive always fought like that, shadow boxed like that etc ,But obviously i know in a real boxing match ,and against some one with real experience, fighting with anything less then the basics is not even Safe..like i said im going to continue and keep it updated.

Sometimes trainers are ******ed. To tell you your hook has no pop on your first day is just stupid cuz you shouldnt be throwing the hook until they teach you anyway! that gym is bunk bro, i would get a refund...

This. Your a long way from developing your style pal. Keep your hand up.

However ive just read you have boxed before so its hard to say, but hands up is a good policy because the minute you come up against someone faster and better which you will you will have a bad habit of keeping it low and getting hit.

Some trainers tell you different stuff though, you get told contridicting stuff and you leave perplexed.

So u wanted to walk in the gym and see a trainer screaming at a new guy listing off the reasons why hes doing everything wrong, and then approach you and make sure hes giving you tips while at the same time being careful to not tell you what to do because your the next ali/tyson? sounds like you was expecting special treatment because youd been utube boxing for a few days and thought you was **** hot and then got sour when the trainer was more impressed with the other guy. tbh i feel sorry for the trainer i had no idea there where such experts around that are willing to pay for lessons they dont need and then badmouth the trainers because they dont know what their doing, i hope when im training people i never get anyone like you.

I also just recently started going to a new gym...it's Seth Peru...the guy who KO'd Kimbo Slice...it's his gym. The gym has an MMA side and a boxing side. The MMA side is air conditioned, brightly lit, has lots of equipment, and a mini octagon. The guys over there do drills while their coach screams out instructions.

The boxing side is dirty, hot, and has only one trainer. No drills on that side, just a free-for-all. The trainer occasionally gives out bits of instruction, but other than that, everyone is more or less on their own...being that I already paid $60 for the first month, I will continue going for the next 3 weeks, but so far...I'm leaning towards finding a new gym.

I guess you just read one post and decided to come up with that clever conclusion?youtube boxing for a few days? you should read the whole thread next time.

And i also failed to mentioned that there was no warm up-stretching involved ....and we did a 2 hour work out. After we (me met the trainer we went directly in to throwing a jab) Does that sound safe? i dont think so.:good

@ mrtony80 same thing over here ,good luck keep us updated on how it turned out.
