Hi one of my trainer discovered a terrible habbit I have when I am being attacked. I close my eyes sometimes so I might block the first punch but the 2nd or 3rd will land.

I didn't notice it myself until he spotted it but I really need to sort it out!
Has anyone ever had this problem and do you know any tips for over coming it!

What worked for me was having a bud keep jabbing me lightly on the forehead. All I'd do was concentrate on keeping my eyes open, and it doesn't hurt. I had a red mark on my forehead for two days and looked like a tit though.

Experience, confidence is key. when your comfortable doing what your doing youll stop closing your eyes, dont have anyone jabbing you in the forehead for some sort of drill, that doesnt sound too smart.

Try doing some work were you just defend with a mate attacking (make sure he is not a twat thats going to go mad) Mix it up some standing on and some moving about. When you cofendent do some with your hands down by your side. Learning to work under pressure is one of the hardest things to lean but once you master it counter punching and picking shots will improve no end.

It's a natural reaction to protect your sight. Just have to teach your brain not to react in that way.

Practice sparring, I used to do it, but then I learned when I could feel the punches. An other exercise/ drill I like doing is where a partner/trainer swings a soft pole of foam over my head, I have to duck and sort of shadow box, you keep your eyes open. It helped me alot with headmovement and keeping my sight in the ring good. Hope this helps you.

lol yeh of course. Trying to work the head movement will practise it a lot more in sparring but I guess it is more habbit then anything.

The advice on this thread is pretty good. Bit more to it for me though.

It worked for me. Obviously the jabs were really soft. It was good conditioning for keepin my eyes open.

Ive never met you or seen you box so obviously i cant say for sure thats y i said 'that doesnt sound too smart' not really because of the power of the shots but because you have to be comfortable in the ring and you will be when your ready and confident on what your doing and your ability, being comfortable and confident enough at what your doing and 'getting used to being hit in the face' are two very different things no one should try to get used to being hit in the face, quite the opposite, youll get hit in the face as you go along dont worry about that and youll get used to it over time and then youll find your not getting hit so much by some people.

Your eyes closing is a natural responce to prevent the eyes being damaged. Being confident in the ring will not stop this reaction. You have to train your brain to react in a different way to you being punched or nearly being punched in the face. Having someone lightly tap you on the forehead or coming close to hitting you while you try to keep your eyes open is a good way to train this.
