Keep in mind that this is personal opinion not sicentific fact.
This goes for boxing as well as anyother sport.
    1. Athletic Ability. Your born with this. You have it or you don't. Anyone can train and drill to improve themselves to the point that they can compete and even be sescfsull at the highest level. How ever there is a limit as to how much secuess. Also Athletic Ability will allow the boxer to progress faster as he finds the training easier than his peers. His coaches will also notic and give him more oppertunities to improve himself. This leads into factor #2

    2. Experance. The best way to learn is through experance. The more you do something the better you get at it. Athletic Ability plays in to experance. The better you are at something the more encourged you get by your secuess. While someone who strugles gets discuraged and is less likely to keep at it.

    3. Boxing smarts or IQ. It is one thing to be a great athlete and another to be trained in the sport. You got to know what to do when it is just you and the other guy in the ring. You have to know what punch to throw and when to throw it. When to attack and when to defend. Rather to block, slip or just get away. Is that an opening or a trap. This of course comes with experance.

2 and 3 can be learned. However 1 can not be learned. I beleve that this is the diffrence between an exlent boxer and an All Time Great boxer.

If these factors seem very much the same in the way I describe them. It is because in my opinion they are conected. They work with each other not seprate from each other.

One that takes on the best available opposition until their level of capability has been recognized.

    Otherwise what's the point?

Themselves. They need to force themselves to be great by overcoming big tasks. Everyone looks at things like physical abilities but it's all in the dedication for them to want to be great. People can be born with skills but other factors such as desire to be great and a will to not let outside distractions prevent them from being great occur eill help them greatly. Anyone besides me who does boxing take training in the gym and outside of it on your free time & fundamentals from good trainers seriously that **** will pay off trust me.

    Mind, body, soul

You have to have the ability to learn.

    The body to execute.

The soul (heart) to be a fighter.

I don't care how athletically gifted you are. At some point you will meet adversity. It takes a special person to be a boxer or a fighter of any type.

The things that make a quarterback great.
    Anticipation,quicktrigger,craftiness,toughness,technique.
Athleticism is a plus when the previous qualities are already present.

Roy Jones Jr. was not a great boxer for example.

Being ****ed in the head. But not so ****ed that they end up in jail or dead.

Every great athlete is pushing them selves that no normal sane person would even consider enduring.

That's for the bums of boxing, not 'GREAT' boxers as the thread clearly states. Tool.
