Yeah i read about that oxygen tank, seems Jim had an idea to fit the appartus under the ring and self administer pure oxygen between rounds..as this had not been thought of before, Corbett didn't exactly flaunt any rules...however he still lost....but Corbett was very forward thinking and i kinda have a lot of respect for old Gentleman Jim..
I suppose he would have been a better version of Corbett than the Last version of Riddick Bowe, but i agree that he was kidding himself. His line of thinking was (according to articles) that he had always stayed in shape (unlike Jeffries) and therefore it wouldnt be as hard to get back to condition in a much quicker time. I tend to think based on the articles that once he started training, he realised that he was in over his head and he was too old and gone, because he seemed to give up on the idea of a fight pretty quickly as soon as Jeffries signed, despite previously indicating that he wanted first shot before Jeffries.
Perhaps Fitz and Jim were not very friendly, but here they seem quite chatty...pondering the old times, or the current (for the time..1912) boxing champ....
I think it looks more like Fitz was pointing and telling him if he opens his mouth he will belt him, and Corbett was apologinsing and telling him to calm down
Corbett called Johnson," The Father oF Fistiana","the greatest defensive boxer of them all",so did Sharkey, and both hated him. Couldnt beat O' Brien? It was a no dec,Burns beat O Brien, Johnson toyed with Burns.Ketchel kod O' Brien TWICE,how come he couldnt see the right hand? How did the Ketchel fight with Johnson finish up? The Hart fight was very debatable ,but you know this. You don't rate Johnson, fine. Sorry, Seamus this is a fly that wont get the trout rising. A rather obvious effort by your standards I may be a fool, but I have some gold, and you know "The Golden Rule". "Them that's got the gold ,makes the rules". Keeeeeeeeeep It Comiiiiiiiing! :hi:
Whether you agree with this comment or not ( I do ) the fool's gold currency of the board line is an instant classic. Of course there are multiple reasons or excuses to why Johnson did not beat O'Brien, Hart, and could not see the wind up pitch right hand from Ketchel.
Corbett, immediately after Fitz knocked him out: "That was a lucky punch. You'll have to fight me again!" Fitz: "I'll never fight you again.....If you ever hit me again, I'll shoot you!" After referee Wyatt Earp disqualified Fitz against Tom Sharkey in 1896, Fitz started after Earp, who wisely drew a gun. The bad assedness in that ring was off the charts. (I've sometimes suspected that Earp was reincarnated as Mills Lane. I could see Lane carrying a gun into the ring to maintain order.) The story goes that he saw Enoch Rector setting up motion picture cameras to film his match with Maher, and approached Rector, demanding a percentage of the proceeds. Upon being denied, he decided that there wouldn't much of a film to show, and bashed Maher out in around 90 seconds.
What do you think was the reason O Brien didnt see it coming twice ? Difference being Johnson got up and kod Ketchel with his next punch O Brien had his head in the resin tray You say Johnson did not beat O Brien, are you saying he lost to him? What was the reason Corbett feather - fist ,dropped Jeffries twice and put him into a trance?atsch Fleischer,Sharkey,Corbett,Godfrey ,all rate Johnson the greatest defensive fighter of the heavyweights, they must all be fools, like that gold ,huh? KEEP THAT HATE A 'COMING:good
Corbett said "You've got to fight me again, you' ve got to," Fitz replied," not likely you gave me a bloody good licking." Corbett, If you don't fight me again ,I'll fight you every time I see you on the street." Fitz, " Jim,if you ever lay a hand on me ,outside the prize ring,I'll kill you."
Wasn't this detail from the Ketchell fight? Folks were split on the outcome. The ref had it for O'Brien, others for Johnson, by all kinds of margins.
Fleischer was fond of Johnson and had a cozy writer to athlete relationship. I would like to see Corbett in direct quotes saying Johnson was the best defensive heavyweight. Corbett did not live past the 1930's, but this quote would be interesting as the mostly stationary grab and clutch Johnson was hit plenty on films, and news read by lesser talents that were not even true heavyweights! Stop the B.S. McVey. A past his prime, much smaller, and much lighter O'Brien made Johnson look bad. A crude and equally small Ketchel floored him. Hart, who certainly was not a great heavyweight beat Johnson in a high stakes fight where the winner was being pre-billed to fight Jeffries next. And as we know, Johnson was very lucky to retain his title in the 1913 match vs. Battling Jim Johnson! Let the blind love fest continue, and please continue to call out anyone who objectively views film, studies ring dates, and reads news papers be cast as " haters ". NEXT.
