I'll choose Petricelli vs Kimbo Slice. Leading up to that fight Kimbo was being massively hyped and Petricelli looked small and was meant to be a sacrificial lamb to Slice after Ken Shamrock was not allowed to fight. Slice probably would have beaten the much more well-known Shamrock imo.

I can't think of another fight like that one. Gracie was outweighed by around 70lbs(250-180), and against a more decorated grappler. It may even be more impressive in hindsight. In terms of people watching the UFC at that time, Royce was already a legend. But Royce was no where near as proven a commodity in his discipline as Severn was in his. Royce had done nothing in competitive grappling events. Dan Severn was a national Greco-Roman champion.

I still can't think of a fight where the smaller fighter was facing as skilled a big man, and came out victorious. Nogueira vs Sapp was amazing, but Sapp not a skilled fighter. Fedor struggled against Arona, but Arona is a muscular 205lber with world class grappling skills. Fedor wasn't 70lbs heavier either. Fedor also came away with the decision.

Granted, Severn didn't have Graice's submission knowledge and had probably never heard of a triangle choke. Still, I consider this to be the ultimate example of this thread's topic.

 

Why is everyone hung up on Sapp-Noguiera? Was Minotauro supposed to lose?

 

I certainly wouldn't say Nog was considered the favorite. Sapp outweighed him by a solid 150 lbs and there was doubt as to whether or not Minotauro could utilize his BJJ against the powerful albeit inexperienced monster. The fight itself is a certified classic with Nog overcoming a serious beatdown and a couple piledrivers before coming back to submit Sapp late in vintage minotauro fashion.

 

Not pre fight, of course not.

Once he got dropped on his head, a lot of minds started to wonder :shock:
