Worked on it shadow boxing, worked on it on the heavy bag but it always felt forced. Too short, too much thinking while i did it and too much a POOR imitation of holyfields. Then one day i turned it over less and tried to emulate de la hoya's (strange) left hook. About an hour ago, my girlfriend and I were doing pad work and it just felt right! ****, it felt like it was supposed. When it connected it had that ****ing sound, that thunk. K, that's one punch that sucks a little less now...:hat
You do pad work with your gf? Lol well nvm that. I'm glad you found your hook, I still can't get mine right; it always feels as if I'm pulling the muscle in my shoulder
On the pads, bags and even shadow boxing my left hook is **** poor, when I'm fighting its my best weapon. Just got my own sorta technique of throwing it.
my missus wont hold the pads, she rekons it hurts her hands too much. took me a while to have a proper hook, now its one of my best weapons. What i did to fine tune the hook was repeate over & over & over again on the bag, right hand left hook, right hand left hook, right hand left hook! its boring and you get a sore shoulder etc but its the ONLY way that got my hook fine tuned. Over Extend the right hand so your left shoulder drops back, then as you pull the right hand back to your face let the hook go with the arm at a 90 degree angle, the 90 degree angle is within the elbow, between forarm and bicept
see, the 90 degree is what i was throwing it at and i found it felt forced and i wasn't getting leverage. surely i was throwing it wrong, so it's all on me but the angle didn't feel right. a brilliant cat by the name of hector roca at gleason's taught me a different way (turning the punch and aiming it for the side of the face) but again, i didn't put in the time needed to get it done right. honestly, the only time it's felt right is just like you said: over and over until you die and my girlfriend is awesome but she did scream at one point tonigt "OW, my ****ing wrist, k we're done with this ****" (it's not that i punch hard, but she's kind of a *****)
:good Goood stuff mate. My favorite punch and my most powerfull!. Its strange cos im orthodox but iv always felt more comfortable throwing the left hook than the right. When i throw the right i feel too exposed. Short left hook i looovee it lol
My problem with it is always the transition and the turn. I tend to pay too much attention to my feet, and it doesn't feel right until I 'm doing the mitts. On the mitts, when I let it go it feels right.
My left hook started to come into it's own when I stopped trying to turn it over, and just threw it thumb up. My wrists aren't flexible at all, so I can't get any kind of range with my fist turned over with my thumb sideways. It also helped a ton when I learnt not to follow through too much. I just practiced by hitting a bag over and over again without making it move and making sure my technique was right. I really, really love my left hook...
