Did you know that Mosley has a 7 in. reach advantage over Cotto? Mosley: 74" Cotto: 67" Mosley has greater reach than Mayweather, Cintron, Margarito, Winky Wright, DLH -- and just one inch short of Light Heavyweight champ Bernard Hopkins. Heavyweight titlist Sultan Ibragimov's arms are only two inches longer than Mosley's. This stat just jumped off the page when I saw it. What can Cotto do to offset the battle of the jabs, and since it will take less time for Mosley's punches to land, how does Cotto handle Mosley's deadly combination of speed + reach + accuracy?
Yeah, his speed(feet and hand), skill, and experience will.. You gotta remember, He is a pretty lanky build, and is kinda tall for 147, so his arms arent TOO far away from proportionate...But they are still kinda long for his size.
How accurate is that stat? Heights, reach, and weight (in non boxing related sports) are often inflated.
If Cotto were a fast slick boxer I could see how Mosley's reach could be negated, but Cotto is a pretty straight-ahead fighter. He's a meat & potatoes brawler who charges forward throwing heavy hooks without a lot of head movement. That ridiculous reach advantage could be punishing him all night long with jabs and lightning-quick counters every time Cotto wants to muscle in. Basically, it looks like Cotto presents no complicated riddle for Mosley. It might be easy pickins' after a few rounds. I can't see Cotto breaking past all that speed/power/offense.
Whether those stats are inflated or deflated, I can't say for sure. http://www.boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=4952&cat=boxer (Shane Mosley. Click Miguel Angel Cotto on the same page)

I agree 100%:good That really is an incredible reach advantage:yikes I think it may be over earlier than alot of people think. I think we'll see the best Mosley yet mates:good Cheers
For a guy thats 5'8, Cotto's height, his arm length should be 68 inches. And as for Mosley, 69 inches. Mosley's reach in not 74 inches. **** his arms would hang at his knee caps. And they certainly do not hang at his kneee caps. His reach in reality is probably 71 inches, because he does have long arms for his height. but no way near 74 inches. Reach is measured from the arm pit to the end of the fist now anyway. Those reach stats are blown way out of proportion. For what reason I have no idea. But 70% of them are false.
I saw that stat and was amazed but when I watched a promo on Youtube - cannot remember which one exactly - and they gave the tale of the tape, their reach was exactly the same...:huh I am not sure what to believe anymore...
shorter arms better suit an inside fighter. Cotto has advantage inside due to shorter arms. Diego was tall fighter with t-rex arms, he could bang on the inside because he had shorter punches. it's really a toss-up fight, interesting how many pick SSM. I've been at the last two Cotto Garden fights...when the dude hits to the body, you hear it in the upper levels of the arena. The man can crack. Best of luck to all who care about the winner, i'm just excited for a great fight!
Thats not reach, thats wingspan. It means that the measurement includes both arms and the backside. So if Cotto and Mosley have an equally broad backside, it means that Mosley has a 3 and 1/2 inch advantage per arm.
Just look at the tale of the tape tomorrow night before the ring walk. HBO always does it from the arm pit to the end of the fist. And they are 95% correct everytime. Cheers.
