This would have been out and out war !!! A lot of skill as well, and I would take Edinburgh's finest to win a close 15 rounder. Maybe a split decision. Ken's jab would be the tiebreaker. Would have no real arguement with anyone selecting Arguello though.
Ken has a great left hand and would stand his own. But for me Arguello is just better in every department. UD Arguello
I cant help but think that Alexis much preferred the aggressor to the ghost, Ken had more "Bounce per Ounce" then most during his prime, and the stamina to maintain it for 15, unlike most pure boxers Ken rarely found the ropes a spiders web trap, bobbing up and down, left and right, he would spin out in a blur of tartan, and with a nod of the head, which was more style then cheekiness, he would launch a salvo of Jabs to add frustration to the embaressment of his persuer, he was excellant to watch, Alexis could be a patient stalker, and the problem to a degree for Buchanan, is that Alexis was a Pro Assassin, he didnt waste ammo, he didnt Sprey and Prey, he didnt drop much "Mistake Material" which opponents could feed on, ultimately i think it is Alexis's "Cultured Pro Application" which lends itself an element of predictability for Kenny, Kenny will expect High Class incoming, and can anticipate it to a degree, - unlike the wild unpredictable incoming from that feral kid from the backstreets of Panama, who could anticipate much of that, Legal (and illegal ) .... I cant help think that off the two Kenny would be dealing with something he could read, map and plot escape routes, Alexis on the other hand, never the quickest in cutting off them escape routes, will be left a tantalising half step behind... If Alexis could not quite cope with the shiftyness of Vilomer Fernandez i suspect he would find Kenny like the Scarlet - and tartan - Pimpernel, he would seek him here and seek him there...but to no avail. Not Alexis favourite Style, Kenny on points.
I like Buchanan's jab and movement to cause Arguello a shedload of problems here, certainly in the early rounds. Arguello probably times Buchanan as it goes on and is the stronger bigger puncher, but Buchanan did reasonably well against the power of Duran. I think it could go either way, Ken could hold out a decision or Arguello may eek out a UD or come on strong for a late KO Certainly don't agree Ken is a class below here
He probably is as far as overall all-time greatness goes. But not inherently as a fighter or for this specific head-to head, no.
First, scratch the Fernandez fight. Arguello screwed the pooch by looking ahead to a Duran mega-fight instead of focusing on the task at hand. I think the rematch makes that clear. Arguello/Buchanan would be a great fight. No need to repeat the points others already made so well. I'd favor Arguello to hunt Ken down and take care of business very late in the fight. (I have an oft admitted pro-Arguello bias, so I am not going to fuss over guys picking Buchanan.) Now a side bar: There were a few different great Arguello fights that did not happen because the timing was all wrong. Arguello/Lopez is one that could have been a barn burner: By the time Danny won the WBC title Arguello had to move up. He vacated the WBA title about one month after Lopez beat Kotey. And we all know what happened to the Duran fight.
I think the rematch is just as irrelevant though...Probably more so. Fernandez had slowed by that stage from reports and just didnt have the legs to carry him like they did in the first fight. Arguello was also probably looking past Vilomar somewhat for the Pryor rematch, he seemed to talk about it a hell of a lot in the prefight interviews from memory. Their first one was a headscratcher in terms of matchmaking...I just dont understand the managerial processes that came to the conclusion that Fernandez would have been a good stay busy fight over 10 rounds. But you could use this and other fights to build a case that Arguello had trouble early on against mobile, fleet footed types..thats why it makes a bit of a sense using it in this discussion even if Alexis wasnt 100% focused for that bout. Anywho...Alexis UD in a tight but clear one.
You must not've watched much of Buchanan. They weren't similar stylistically in a way that a statement like that could be made. Buchanan had a better jab, much better footwork, and was certainly the more elusive target, even if that latter fact could leave him vulnerable at times.
Buchanan in a good fight. Ken's jab and nimbleness would make Alexis look awkward at times. Alexis was better with a style more stationary where he didn't have to look for his opponent. Buchanan made a much more nimble boxer in Laguna swing at the air and did it for 15 rounds in the heat of P.R. while in front of Laguna. Not to deny Alexis his greatness but this style is all wrong for him. Buchanan in 15. Scartissue
If Buchanen could cope with Duran's bull rushes as well as he did, I don't think Alexis could overwhelm him. I think Aruello could box with a master like Ken but as others have said this is a tossup. Arguello is the greater fighter but in this fight the styles favor Buchanen.
