Why did Toney and RJJ never have a rematch?

I've heard Toney say repeatedly that if he hadn't underestimated RJJ, if he had trained, if he had made the weight properly, that he would have beaten him. I'm not saying that I believe this, but just that I have heard him say it.

Can anybody educate me as to why this rematch never happened? Did Toney not pursue it? Could he not make the weight? Did RJJ not want it?

    Thanks.

Also, I'm aware that James Toney is fat, and most likely enjoys Burger King and myriad other fast food.

The speed that Jones possessed just made it impossible for Toney to work his game. It isn't a thing you can just adapt to. Sure if Jones had a shitty night then Toney could beat him, but I don't see Roy coming in anything less than 100% for a fight with Toney.

RJJ was too quick & clever for him the first time around. Toney was infamous for coming in not the best of shape in fights but he has only himself to blame. You ever seen Toney recently?

wasn't really close...pretty clear and easy fight to score...not really a need to have a rematch

Jones dominated the fight. A rematch would have made about sense as a Pacquiao/Cotto rematch.
Tone also lost his next fight to Montell Griffin at light heavyweight. Making a rematch less likely.

There may have been 1 if Toney didn't lose twice to Griffin, who Jones faced instead

After Jones, Toney moved up to light heavyweight to "lose" to Griffin and Jones stayed at SMW. They could've met up at '96 or after but for some reason they didn't I guess they went there own ways but there really is no definite reason I can think of that they didn't fight again. Here's an interesting link though it still doesn't give a definite reason either. ***Sigh*** I tried....lol.

Excuses excuses from James Toney. It was completely his fault that he didn't train and the fight was such a one sided beat down that it wouldn't have mattered what shape Toney came in. Besides, Toney was never a top draw and Roy went on to much bigger and better things.... no reason to give him a rematch.

I wonder how a fight between these two would go today..... hmmmm

Toney's losses to MG did not help him any, however I thought he won both fights with MG, especially the 2nd fight. RJ flat out refused to have a rematch with Toney. I admit Toney did not deserve one for a while, but he did earn a shot latter on when he moved to cruiser and won 9 straight fights against the top cruiser weights, then he defeated the top cruiser weight who was a gold medalist, undefeated, and had the cruiser title for 4yrs and was the best cruiser weight in the world for those 4yrs. That is when Toney deserved a rematch with Jones.

It would of been smart and a better move for RJ to have fought Toney at cruiser instead of moving back down to light heavyweight and fighting Tarver, which we all know Tarver was the achillies hill for Jones. Plus it would of given Jones a shot at a title in 5 divisions. It would of been best to go for the 5th division title back then when he was in his prime instead of waiting until recently. when he was way past his prime, thus getting blown out in 1 rd. Also, if he would of fought Toney after he beat Ruiz he would not have had to lose much if any weight to make the cruiser weight limit. If my memory is correct Jone's weight was only in the 190's for the Ruiz fight.

It would of been a big fight because you have RJ's just winning a portion of the heavy weight title and then you had Toney winning the cruiser weight title and defeating the ring magazine cruiser weight champ.

After Toney defeated Jirov and after Jones defeated Ruiz that is when Toney deserved a rematch and that is when it would of made sense for RJ to fight Toney again, because by this time Toney deserved a rematch. Hell, I recall George Foreman asking Jones to give Toney a rematch in an interview during an HBO boxing telecast (I do not recall the exact time this happened).

Main reason why RJ would not give Toney a rematch when Toney actually deserved it is because he did not want to risk possibly losing to Toney. Toney (when in shape) is one guy you don't want to give a 2nd chance to because he could win. And Toney was in shape from 2001-2004 until his leg injury.
