Laugh or cry: Matchmaking with the Klitschkos

So let me get this straight.

Whenever a guy completely dominates his opposition and the fights aren't competitive its a **** era? Like when Roger Federer was blowing away all his opponents in tennis it meant the era was ****? Or when Michael Schuhmacher was winning one F1 title after another it was an era of weak race drivers? Or when Gary Kasparov was playing his chess opponents silly, making them look like amateurs?

Now that's some logic.

There is absolutely no objective way of verifying this idea. How good/great a fighter is has so much to do with subjective media perception, hype, personal hopes of people. Steve Bunce was convinced that Sam Peter was the next Tyson. Larry Merchant really believed in Arreola.

I actually feel that the 1970's didn't have very good second tier contenders. Jerry Quarry, Chuvalo and others would be beaten IMO by Chambers, Adamek, maybe Chagaev. Norton would be cannon fodder for either Klitschko. I can't prove that sentiment either, but just because the 70's have the historic nostalgia of Frazier, Ali, Foreman, that doesn't mean that the fighters were actually better H2H than in any other era. Lennox Lewis never had the media hype of a Joe Frazoer, but I would take Lennox to absolutely destroy Joe 10 out of 10. Why was Ali - Frazier the fight of the century? Because of the unique historic events around the fight. Does it mean these were the two best fighters of the century? Foreman at that time would probably already have pummeled Frazier.

Holyfield - Bowe was labeled a great fight? Why? It showed awesome heart and excitement, yes. It was also a display of the antithesis of ring intelligence, a former cruiserweight going toe to toe with a bigger man instead of trying to box him. A great fight from some perspectives, but Lennox Lewis might very well have beaten both fighters, maybe in a more boring, intelligent way.

 

Good post. Shame a lot of people don't understand the difference between subjectivity and objectivity. But it's an entirely different topic, way beyond the scope of this forum...

You can make all the arguments you want for the K-brothers but at the end of the day IT A **** ERA. Don't think so then name 3 HW fighters who have any chance of beating either brother. I love boxing and especially the heavies but there isn't one American HW who should be considered a threat. I compare the HW division now to the light heavy weight division when RJJ ruled it.

right now he is unbeatble, i even bet he would beat a prime vitali. his defense is superb, he has one of the best and hardest jabs ever! his right hand is the most powerfull right hand since shavers, and he has a monster short and distance left hook. he fights boring, right, but he fights to win, and that's counts. wlad of right now is one of the best heavyweights the world has ever seen.

When you take a 44 year old fat foreman or an old ass holyfeild, neither of which were top dog of their era and they can go in and bang away at the **** now days at their age, and now u got tyson talkin comeback, yeah.... The HW division sucks ass and thats proof enough

 

these people not showing up to work blemish wlads overall performance.
