There is a guy at my gym who I spar often, and he leaves his left hand down around his waist while keeping his right hand up but when you throw punches at him, he leans straight back and it's ****ing awkward to spar against. I'll try to throw combinations to increase my chances of landing but he leans SO far back that it's like I'm reaching/jumping or overextending to punch him and I usually get clipped with something stupid. My most success comes from when I just bull him into the corner and hammer him to the body. But in the middle of the ring, it's awkward. It's not even that he's tht good, it's just that his way of defense is awkward as all HELL.
Rush him. If he's leaning straight back he won't have proper balance. You should be able to get some shots off because he will have to reset himself to be able to move or throw properly. Or he may just topple over. And instead of reaching really far after him and over extending when he's leaning back, use your feet and step in til you're in proper range.
Don't over stretch your offence for starters, thats what he wants but if that causing trouble you need to close the gap. If he's outstepping backwards or laterally as you move forward then you might have a differant problem to deal with.
Feint or double jab and step in behind each if he's just leaning back they are gonna start to hit him
Naz used to do this alot and im finding myself doing it more and more often. it gets people excited thinking youve got no where to go because you look off balance which you will be if not done properly and then they move in with straights like a lot have suggested, maybe even reaching a bit making a nice target for an uppercut that can be loaded up very nicely if done properly, if done **** youll be off balance with nowhere to go and no real punches to counter with you have to support your upperbody using your feet, he also used to use this move to set up the right then he'd leap right into a harsh straight right hand, i dont think it would be nice moving forward into a right hand like that, if i was you i would find the angles on him its a good trick but there are angles that can be found on it (as there is in any defencive manouver) that make it a bit awkward for him to land on u from, and these are the angles you must find but then again the loading/rockback can be done in a few different variations loading up different shots so its not as easy as it sounds but there arent too many things you can do from this position so its not the best trick to use too often. but yeh if hes not very technical throw a few leaping jabs like your trying to catch upto him then feint the jabs and close the distance with a hard straight right to the plexus and a left hook to either head or body (mix it up) if you catch him with a good right in that position hell know about it.
his left hand is LOW, which means that going to the body WON'T BE EASY. Actually he is waiting for you to go to the body and then counter.
What I found works is just walking in instead of punching your way in. Sounds stupid, but they wait for a punch then lean back. If you just step in, fully guarded of course, they will lean back as well. Close the gap with footwork first, and then punch. One beat later, if that makes more sense. Close gap then attack, not close gap while attacking. They will often counter a punch that isn't there, and then it's your turn. Or they'll just lean back waiting for a punch, and it's your turn one beat later when they do not expect one. Another option would be to make him come to you instead. That may present different problems though, if he has longer arms for example it could be unwise. Then again it's probably not what he's used to. Not sure if that made sense to anyone but me, I'm tired and need sleep
Feint, then time him going back, improve ur forward moving footwork, try a different type of footwork
