Roy Jones was supposed to be smart enough too, and he was always one of the most health/safety-conscious guys in the game, but he's been overstaying his welcome for the past, what... 6 years or so?

The thing is that no matter what it looks like on the outside, at their cores, all of these guys we talk about are fighters, and they have a certain mindset that brought them to the top and that also makes it very hard for them to walk away. Besides, even more than being warriors, these guys, like Mayweather, Jones or in the past Leonard, Ali, Robinson etc. are very egotistical and in love with the spotlight. They always wanna hear the roar of the crowd one more time.

 

And Hopkins hasn't fought back in tough situations? I love both Bhop & Floyd(Hopkins more) and Hopkins is old as crap and his stamina isn't what it use to be so he needs to take his breathers. You ever noticed after he takes them he gets more aggressive though like he did with Calzaghe and RJJ so he does fight back. Hopkins also never demanded extra testing from nobody and to be a "*****" he fought a prime Jones and toke the L like a man. If there was a prime RJJ in Floyd's division Floyd wouldn't be so eager to fight him:deal.

And Floyd isn't too eager to face Pacquiao either. Say what you want about Hopkins but he has shown much more balls than Floyd. The only person I can think in his career than he could've, should've fight is Dawson. With Floyd the list goes on...

Good,good post. I agree older fighters miss the spotlight and feel they should achieve a little more before they go and even the smartest fighters like you said can make the terrible mistake of staying too long.
