After watching Jacobs vs Pirog it was interesting to see how the ref handled the tko call. Not to say jacobs wasn't totally out but he wasn't knocked totally unconscious so although he may not have beat the 8 count the ref could have gave it to him just for the benefit of the doubt. A lot of times in todays boxing it seems like refs jump the gun a little bit to wave a fight off. Post some fights from the past when a fighter barely beat a count that probably would have been called off if it happened today...
to be fair jacobs looked disgusted with the ref , not just the usual acting after a stoppage but genuinly disgusted
regardless... who knows... post some older fights when a guy beat a count when today it may have been called off...
jacobs' lights were out before he hit the canvas and pirog already had his arms raised. he knew it, the ref knew it. yeah jacobs came to and like any competitor wanted to continue but the ref did the right thing. he lets jacobs up and allows it to continue after being sparked out by that shot...jacobs may get hurt bad. no blame in the ref and no shame for jacobs. he's 23...the show aint over for him.
Ingemar Johansson-Floyd Patterson 1 would've been stopped much sooner. Ike Williams-Beau Jack was a late stoppage by any era's standards. Archie Moore-Yvon Durelle 1 may have been stopped in today's era, maybe not. Look at Manny Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez 1.
Chacon-Boza edwards II would have been stopped. Chacon was getting pummeled early but came back to beat Boza. Im thinking Mccellan would have been awarded a 1st round ko over Benn anywhere else. Maybe the Hearns Barkely 1st fight. All these guys taking beatings ended up coming back to win.
Marquez could very well have been stopped after the third knockdown vs. Pac. He wasn't out, but was very fortunate not to have a three knockdown rule.
I am a massive Benn fan but the ref in that fight really didn't seem to know what he was doing. I think Benn got a lot of extra time to recover than he should of had, mainly due to an incompotant ref.
