Casamayor can quite legitimately be placed in the #10 spot of the top ten best fighters of the last decade. He gave prime Castillo a hell of a fight, his trilogy with Corrales will be long remembered. He KO'd an unbeaten Katsidis in spectacular fashion and his a host of other good wins on his resume. Even pushing 40, he was highly competitive against the P4P #2 and should be regarded as one of the absolute best counter-punchers of the era. But now its far to say Joel is shot. No 'ifs' and 'buts', the man is shot. There were sparodic moments in the fight against Guerrero where Joel boxed well - he was able to do this because he still has wilely tricks and vast experience - but his stamina is gone, his reflexes are gone, his heart isn't in it, and the reality is - his friend Guerrero probably carried him. Now, after near 400 pro/am fights, after a olympic gold and 4 world titles, the 'perfect moment' I'm talking about his this - in round 10 he puts Guerrero on his arse with a sharp, stiff jab - the first man to score a KD against him and the fight ends with both men laughing and smiling - that's a great moment to end things, Joel - lets call time on a GREAT career.
casamayor is the type of dude you can watch and learn something new every time. love the cuban southpaws.
I'm not sure about his ranking? But I will say I enjoyed watching Casa fight over the years. ( I even went on a limb and predicted FOTY between him & Guerrero, on paper) That said, I agree on retirement, but I'm pretty safe that he will fight again.
Dan Rafael said in he has tax problems and child support problems. He did a article yesterday I believe, all about Casamayor. Check it out at ESPN, nice little tribute.
They were talking about it during the fight. Manny said that check for that fight was going to the IRS and that the fight was supposed to open some pay days for him, which it wont
Basically, the Top 9 of the last decade pick themselves, only debate for me is order: Manny FMJ MAB EM JMM Winky Mosley Calzaghe Hopkins (not in order^) Then for the 10th spot, I think it's between Castillo Corrales Casamayor Depeding on how you scored Castillo-Casamayor, I feel Joel has the best claim. But most would go with Castillo, I guess.
Oh right. I watched the British commentary wasn't mentioned, but I know Joel isn't exactly Mr Prudent when it comes to money.
:good I hope he retires too but I have the feeling he will want one more fight. If I could make a suggestion thats a perfect fight for him: Casamayor/Barrera. I'm sure almost no one would buy this fight but this one makes the most sense if he wants to fight on.
he will continue to fight...he is having financial problems...he looked awful the first few rounds, but i believe it was him ad******g to fighting a southpaw, he did not look bad later in the fight...he is no longer an elite level fighter, but he is good enough to fight and beat average guys
