What I mean by this is will Dos Santos fall too much in love with his hands and not use other tools? Chuck and AA had some great ko's over the years and thought everybody would fall by using hands only and not use other skills. I thought JDS could have used legkicks when Roy was covering up but just kept hitting Roy's gloves when he was covering up. JDS was throwing great combinations with speed and power and has the best hands in the UFC HW division imo. He showed good td defense and if roy didn't have such a good chin he would have ko'd him.
What I found interesting, is he couldn't finish Roy when AA did. AA has very crisp boxing but I thought JDS' punching power was much bigger than either it is, or Nelson's head got thicker. I have concerns about the way JDS fights - we haven't seen his sprawl against an elite wrestler so we don't know if he can keep fights standing the way Chuck could. One thing is for sure, he's looking very very one dimensional.
The fight wasn't telling on JDS power. The guy can kill with those hands but sometimes guys don't want to get ko'd. Being ko'd can often be more mental than physical. Roy did not give in mentally. Good on him. I think the 3 hard rounds were good for Junior. JDS did vary it in that fight.
I'm worried he'll catch Anderson Silva syndrome, and refuse to engage. I don't think he will become a wannabe boxer though, although I don't think Chuck did either, he did what he had to do to win. The problem is when guys fall in love with their hands are guys who do it and it hurts them, like Rampage if it helps them, its just smart fighting.
In a fight like this, there was absolutely no reason for JDS to do anything different except to keep punching away at Nelson. I doesn't make sense to put yourself in possible danger when you are dominating the fight on your feet. Although he did a couple of takedowns, which I found surprising. Of course, the down side is that JDS isn't getting any practical ring experience on the ground. That could prove fatal against Lesnar or Velasquez.
