Does James Toney do roadwork..? No... Don't ****ing do it, its aload of crap. And its determinal to your speed & power.
David Haye certainly did do roadwork at one time or another. Joe Calzaghe was all about old school running up hills etc and he had very fast hands.
I agree to an extent. Roadwork is necessary to build up the gas tank and keep the weight at a good level. I think perhaps the debate is how much roadwork is needed and that is subjective due to different individuals and body types. I also found that doing just the right amount of running increased my recovery from punishing shots.
I recommend looking into the Pose method of running and an Ipod. Perhaps you should also read "Born To Run" We are for all intents and purposes, custom built for running.
I love running, it's a great time to clear the head and I'm always in a better mood after a run than before it. Lately, I've had to cut down though. I've been getting a strange feeling in my left knee every time my foot makes impact with the ground. It's not painful, it just feels as if the knee is kind of weak. Any of you know the feeling? I know I should see a specialist, but my finances don't allow it at this time.
Swimming would be a great alternative. Juan Diaz doesn't do roadwork, he swims. To all of you who don't run due to leg/foot/knee issues, what kind of pain are you getting, and when does it occur? Humans are meant to run. I bet it's all the high tech running shoes that are everywhere, causing these injuries. The extra "support" in these shoes just force you to heel strike (landing on your heels when running), which is very bad for the knees and body. You're supposed to either midfoot strike or forefoot strike. I had all kinds of issues with almost all of the high tech running shoes you can name (Asics/New Balance/Brooks/etc). Knee injuries, ankle injures, hip pain, etc. ALL of that went away once I discovered the "barefoot simulation" shoe. I use the newer BIKILA model. The KSO model is their most popular one. The Vibram Five Fingers. http://www.vibramfivefingers.com/products/index.cfm Yes the shoes looks hideous to most, but I am in love with these. They have NO kind of support, which is healthy for the feet/legs. It takes time to get your foot/leg muscles to get used to not being supported, but it's long term benefits are wonderful. I was 240lbs a month ago, I am now 220lbs running 3-4 miles everyday with NO kind of leg/foot/hip pain anymore! The first 2 weeks I dealt with plenty of soreness in the legs/feet, however (which is expected), and also foot blisters (which went away after rest, being replaced with protective callouses). And yes I run on concrete. Try em out, you will have a hard time finding a negative review on them.
El Puma, the jurys still out on Pose, personaly I like the concept. But for interprating it into contact and sports like Boxing, not a good idea different posture and awareness.
Scrap, You feel the style of running pose incorporates, will affect a fighters stance/posture in a match? I would think Pose would help the fighter reduce impact injuries and run w more pleasure.
James Toney went 12 rounds twice, with one of the hardest hitting heavyweighs at the time "Sam Peter", and it was one of the most high intensity fights of that year at Heavyweight, and how old was James Toney..? No matter what anyone says, James Toney is always in fighting shape, not catwalk shape, not mensfitness shape, but fighting shape. All James Toney know's is fighting, look at his neck.... He's made to fight.
Its the position off the Head, plus the mechanics of the abductors change. Nobody runs Heel, its the biomechanical brake.
