I come here often, even though I never post, and read so I thought I would just chime in on the Alexander/Kotelink fight and its controversial decision. I attended the fight with my dad. He is not much of a fight fan, but enjoys the prize fight atomsphere. Me, I have been watching boxing faithfully since about 2000. My dad asked me about Alexander, and I said the guy has descent boxing skills, good KO power and is very descent overall for a young fighter. I then went over his negatives. I said in the last 3-4 fights I've seen of him, he gets hit too much. I personally think this is due to a lack of head movement, bad positioning, and bad timing. I then said, he will need to sooner than later get a better trainer. Bell rings, Alexander is very busy first 3-4 rounds in my eyes winning them. Then Kotelnik starts to consistently land the jabs to the face.(my old man is thinking im a genius at this point..lol) And it seemed to me, at ring side, that the hits got harder and harder as the match went on. Don't really want to get into judging the fight, but I thought it could have went either way. Reminds me of Mosley vs DeLaHoya. Delahoya was the busier fighter but Mosley surgically landed the harder shots. I tend to lend toward the busier fighter as the winner. I thought DLH should have won that fight and I though Alexander should have narrowly got a unananimous decision or a split decision. But thats debateable. I do feel that the 116-112 scores were fixed. There was a nice turn out, and King isn't about to mess his St.louis money up over a close descion to Kotelnik. But the point I'm trying to make is this. Kevin Cunningham has done alot for the community. He was a former cop that decided to get involved with the community and take kids off the streets using a boxing gym. I commend him for this. However, for Devon to go to the next level, he needs a next level trainer. There is no excuse for this fighter to be making the same mistakes that he has been for the last 4 fights. This should have been worked out long before now. I know Devon probably feels a since of loyalty to him, but in order to beat guys like Khan, and the likes you need top notch training. I think we all can agree that devon has the size, speed, and heart to be at the top but, Cunningham isnt the one. This is how almost all St.Louis fight fans feel. I watched the HBO showcase the next morning and I listened to the advice Kevin was giving. I was thinking wtf is this guy talking about. He is an amatuer trainer. Period. As For Cory Spinks, He is done. I knew he was going to get KTFO as soon as I googled Bundrage. The word on the street is he has been seen in the hood the 2 weeks leading up to the fight partying, smoking and drinking. He is an embarrasment. He can say what he wants, but the bottom line is he quit infront of his home crowd. Then he wants to act suprised and confused when the ref stops the fight. He is an embarrasment to the Spinks name. If I was his uncle I would stop coming to the fights. My 6'4 250 pound ass booed him as he walked past me in the main isle. The rest of St.Louis feels the same way about this bum. He should take his Hummer on 26's and move to Canada or somewhere.(not to knock canadians...lol) But Devon can be that man, it's going to take a lot of work, and a new trainer. But I still have faith he can be a top tier boxer.
I'm from the lou(i was also at the fight btw), and i literally feel exactly the way you do. Devon needs a new trainer for sure, Cunningham is good to a point but lets be real devon has some massive holes that need to be filled, and quickly, because bradley, khan, and maybe even maidana and ortiz will punch right through them. **** cory spinks.
I had just posted in another thread that I was wondering where the calls for him to switch trainers were. I'm in no position to judge a trainer myself, but it does seem to me that Devon did not do what they talked about doing in their game plan. That is, step to the side and go around the guard. He decided to stand in front and fire straight on. Once a guy gets in the ring, if he can't/won't take instruction, not much any trainer can do. The fighter is the one that ultimately has to make his own decisions.
i'm from st. louis. we aren't a city known for being faithful to it's stars, ie. spinks, the rams, etc. devon alezander has plenty of potential, but i could see his defense was lacking. very little head movement and he doesn't feint at all and i figured bradley could handle him. i was shocked to see how his offensive arsenal disappeared in his last fight. with all this said, he was in there against a good fighter who deserved to win but got robbed for marketability reasons. alexander has potential to be a great fighter, but it may just stay potential. in short, he's all right. B- fighter.
hahaha u know he definitely cried in the locker room after seriously no hate on boxers crying after a fight because it can be emotional and all but if you spent 0 time in the gym working for the victory, **** your tears buddy.
All of the ATG fighters have a off night in terms of expectation, but its what they learn from them and how they proceed from there. Alexander , won in my eyes as well as the judges and most experts and media outlets covering the fight.
