TBH, when Pascal decided to defend his title against Dawson, coming straight off surgery to top it off, I thought it was dumb.

I spoke to my friend, who's a boxing fan but not really a hardcore fan, about it. I told him its a pretty bad move to throw Pascal in there against Dawson right off the bat.

He said "Isn't Dawson one of the best fighters in the world"

I said "Yea, that's my point"

Him: "Well how dumb would Pascal have to be to turn down an opportunity to face one of the best fighters in the world. Don't you think Pascal is in there to prove to the world that he's one of the best fighters in the world? If you were in his shoes wouldn't you want that opportunity?"

So that was an eye-opener, because he was spot on.

Even if Pascal loses, no regrets. At least he went for the gold. If he continues to perform well after that loss, he can still get big paydays.

Angulo is not a middleweight. The reigning middleweight champ has expressed zero interest in fighting any ranked middleweight.

Some of these could have had underlying circumstances, bad deals, timing, etc. But to be honest there is no reason these fights shouldnt happen. In my opinion fighting for a little less money is better than sitting on your ass doing nothing 6-12 months a year and watch your potential HOF career go down the drain.

I hate the culture of dismissing top fighters after 1 loss as well, but lets look at the example you pointed out.

After the Hopkins fight, Pavlik came back in a very weak defense against Rubio. Then didn't fight for 10 months, pulled out of an exciting fight in that time and then had an even weaker defense. He might have had injury problems, but you can't blame people for losing interest in him.

Look at other guys who have lost, but who came back strong. Pascal, Angulo, Martinez, Williams; just to get a few guys from looking through this thread. They all lost, came back determined, got back to the top and people have forgotten and forgiven their loss.

If Pavlik came back strong and became World Champion again, you think people would be calling him a bum, or a top fighter who just had a bit of a slump?

If there was 1 belt of at least 1 main belt with a linear title it would be a whole different story. People like Caballero and Martinez would never have a hard time getting a fight.

That and networks like HBO making money hungry monsters like Angulo and Berto.

Berto never fought MOsley because they offered him less money copare to was he is used to getting paid. Berto? Carlos Quitana and Collazo was this mans best competition. Why one earth is HBO paying him so much? Not to mention the fact that he is not a big ticket saler.

Angulo, who has never fought top fighter, is turning now turning down 750K to fight Martinez because he wants 1 million? WTF!

Exactly, add Cotto to that list as well. Look at MMA -- do you think people won't be watching silva's next fight, or Fedor? I don't even watch MMA, but I guarantee you the people will come out in droves for it. Look at Hatton, still had a big following even after his loss. BigReg just wants to play devil's advocate because his boy Mayweather is a prime example of what we're talking about here.

Ya, we could go on all day; Kessler, Dirrell, Pacquiao, Morales, Barrera, Marquez, Margarito....

People on here always have knee jerk reactions for the 1st week after a result, over doing whatever the result is, and then after that if the fighter comes back everything is alright

Well when you're a pro boxer, and you step up the competition and lose, then all it means is that you're not as good as you or your fans think you are. Are we suppose to just support a boxer who'd rather fight bum after bum, just so he doesnt fall in popularity once he loses? Cmon now. Step up or step off.

Not true. Cotto only has two losses against guys who at the time of his losses to them were considered the most avoided fighter in boxing and the best fighter in boxing respectively and all that's said about him is how worn and washed up he is. Cotto came back strong and won a belt, but many, many fans on ESB still kill him for his two losses. Even now if you glance over at the Cotto vs. Chavez Jr thread many fans are picking Chavez to win and are basing that off of Cotto's previous losses. While Chavez has done nothing but fight bums and Cotto has faced top opposition for the past 5-6 years.

I agree with BigReg in that the trend the thread starter referenced is a by product of the trend BigReg referenced. When guys are dropped after their first loss it is in their best interest to remain unbeaten for as long as possible even if that means taking on lower level competition. We all have to remember that after all boxing is a business to boxers. It is their way of life. Whether we like it or not they have to do what's in their best interest not ours. Often times those two things don't align.

Not for nothing, But ain't Sergio a middleweight?
(Last time I checked Angulo is still campaigning at 154lbs)

That said... Angulo should have taken the fight anyway.
