Undefeated Fighters are not True Champions?

True, but I mean (putting the health issues aside), Lewis was meant to have that rematch, I thought they were already talking and that the contract was close to being signed but the he suddenly doesn't wanna fight Vitali and chose to retire... I was just thinking, if he was thinking of retirement he could've done it before talking (verbally agreeing) about a rematch, and just retire. It just made me wonder about the reasons why he did it so suddenly. Was he doubting the victory based on last performance of both of them? Did he spoke of the rematch too hastily?

I don't know but still he was a great champ, no doubt about that!!

 

Very good post. Being undefeated is not the automatic equivalent of being untested. And being a true champion doesn't necessarily have to involve bouncing back from a loss, that's ridiculous.

What is true is that many undefeated fighters in this day and age are undefeated because they are untested, but that's not the same thing.

And what's also true is that a loss can greatly improve a fighter if he deals with it like a real champion, and uses it as an opportunity to learn.

But I agree, no need for a 'true champion' to have a loss... Some champions would certainly benefit from it I think, one in particular.

 

A guy can be a true champ whether he is undefeated or not.

While I do believe the undefeated aspect is pretty much always overplayed, and usually an indication of clever, or careful matchmaking, being undefeated, in and of itself, does not mean a fighter is made up of lesser stuff.

 

Noone would make such a claim.

Marciano was the meaning of a true champion,and it had nothing to do with him being undefeated.

Great sportsman,great person outside of the ring,one of the best roll models,and a hell of a great champion.

Bernard never "clearly" lost any of his fights outside of jones. Besides, him being the underdog in all of his fights and prevailing against the odds overshadows his losses.

 

So is Floyd a true champion ?
