Hagler wins UD, he would press the attack, james counter punches would not be enough to win against Marvin
Hagler was too solid in every aspect. Defeating him would take someone who was not in his range like Leonard. Only that kind of fighter beat Hagler. If you fought in his range even if you were great defensively like Toney, the person would still get hit. Hagler had a 75 inch reach and southpaw. Hagler by UD. If Toney decided to fight Hagler would stop him.
I don't think James would just rely on counterpunching - at MW, he was an aggressive pressure fighter, just like Hagler. That's why Hagler said that Toney was the best MW champ that has come after him. It would be a war. Hagler UD.
Toney has the better defense, better counter punching, sneakier punch and smarter boxer. Certainly nowhere near as diligent for most of his career as Hagler, but he showed against McCallum he could fight a high paced technical war against McCallum at his 160lb best. This would certainly be a close fight where Toney could outbox Hagler to a close UD
That's just wrong man. I know you know your stuff, but you have some blind spots. Toney was struggling with Dave Tiberi, Reggie Johnson, Sanderline Williams, and NEEDED a knockout to beat Michael Nunn, and he's going to beat Hagler? Ludicrous. Hagler completely outworks Toney, outmuscles him, and when he chooses, controls the fight with his jab (doesn't necessarily have to land it, but it sets up his offense). Toney never fought, let alone beat anyone close to Hagler at Middleweight. McCallum was an aging fighter, above his best weight when he drew with Toney. "High paced technical war"? So you're suggesting that that version of McCallum could bring as much hell as Hagler? Prime Hagler is a completely different beast.
Hagler would be better suited boxing on the outside for stretches, in my opinion. Mixing up the strategies when necessary, etc. Toney was better defensively in the upper body, and a better close range counter-puncher. Otherwise he doesn't hold any advantages. Hagler's far superior footwork and jab would make the key difference.
great matchup. Toney is one of my favorites but I go with Hagler by decision. superior training ethic and his overall beastness wins it in a fight of the year.
Styles make fights and Toney was up for the big ones, lesser fights he was inconsistant and didn't always perform to his best, hence I'm taking Toney at his very best for this 1. He was also doing far better against Nunn than given credit for, gradually breaking him down and I'd say he was bossing the second half of that fight 'Not faced anyone close to Hagler' - well no but in terms of the ability of his opponent Toney's are exceptional - Nunn/McCallum/Johnson On another note, who has Hagler faced remotely similar to Toney? Hagler will be missing and getting countered for his trouble more than against any other opponent I really think it would be a close fight, but I see Toney's skills edging it, obviously if it really happened in reality I wouldn't put money on the inconsistant Toney but at his best I think he can win
I hate it when they make out the Nunn fight to be some outclassing domination over Toney until he pulls a knockout out of his rear.
