Honestly, I can't speak firsthand to how he was viewed in Europe. But, I've been told by others(European) that they knew and heard very little of him as he was coming up and for much of his reign as the wbo top dog.

I suppose inconsequential may be too harsh a word.

Bottom line, if I am to believe what I'm told, there was no talk of him being ATG at the time, even in Europe. Is this true?

could never have happend really could it. Toney was a CW before Calzaghe even fought Eubank
    Calzaghe pulled out against
    This content is protected
on more than one occasion like he did Lacy and pulled out 3 times against Sheika, but when Joe was ringside with a view to fighting Johnson he lost again, that time to Woods and lets be honest Johnson, he has so many losses and loses most of the time he steps up, I cant imagine anyone giving credit for that. Ottke dosent get credit for it.

, his trainer admitted he didnt want to know, Joe cant be blamed for that one. Yet people discredit Ottke on here all the time, so id be surprised if he got praise for that

another who didnt want to know, but still Calzaghe beat Kessler who beat Beyer
    Calzaghe beat Hopkins who thrashed

I wouldnt have said ATG at that time but definately not inconsequential. The problem was alot of people wouldnt face Calzaghe at the time ie Hopkins, Ottke and Beyer and some others pulled out and changed their minds about meeting him - Tate pulled out and retired and Echoles backed out

I hate defending Joe C, but in the interest of fairness...

If I'm remembering correctly, there was no way Calzaghe and Toney would have fought because once Calzaghe started making a name for himself at super middle, Toney was at higher weights. Could be wrong, but I seem to remember it that way.

It's hard to imagine some of the other names you listed really boosting Calzaghe's resume that much. For instance, haters would point to the fact that Taylor had lost to Pavlik twice before going up to super middle(and later was KO'd by Froch and Pavlik, subsequently lessening the value of a win over Taylor). You could do the same for a number of the above fighters...I don't know how many people would really respect a win over Ottke...unless it was in Germany:yep. For Pavlik, haters would say old man Hopkins pitched a shutout on him and later a junior Middleweight beat him...and Calzaghe would be picking on a smaller fighter. Etc.

That's not to say there aren't names that would have been HUGE. RJJ, if he beat him, would be the holy grail if he clipped him in his prime.

He's proven to be good, but not yet to be great, that's all...
We'll never know how great he would've become...

Joe Calzaghe is the "Babe Ruth" of boxing.
A certain fraction of non-boxing, pro-ufc civilization champions him, but the truth is, he never faced the best and 39 of his wins are against the same level of bums Joe Louis would select for his "bum of the month" bouts.

Over rated, no ATG, and had good, but limited boxing skills.
