Simon Brown had an underrated defense in my opinion, for a mostly offensive fighter anyway. Caught a lot of punches on his shoulders on the inside, while counter beautifully. Who else?
Jake Lamotta. People talk about his granite chin(which he did have)..but he was no rocky balboa. Lamotta was quite the slickster. Very adapt at slipping jabs with slick head movement, he even did some nice shoulder rolls with his fluid upperbody movement. He also could play possum with the best of em!
Ever see the talk show interview with LaMotta and a very young Tyson? The host says something along the lines of LaMotta having a granite chin, blahblahblah generic ****. And LaMotta calmly replies he wouldn't be sitting there talking coherently if he had taken most of those shots flush, he had an underrated D, etc. Chuvalo says the exact same thing, all the time.
It get's said so often now to the point where it no longer under-rated. But you are right, under-rated outside of the Classic for sure.
Early Simon Brown was a much better technician in general. Unfortunately he's remembered more these days for the power-bombing slugger he eventually became. Anyways, I'll throw Eduardo Lausse, given the recent article on him. Very adept at rolling with the punches.
I'm loving the generic answers so far that are really going to go places when it comes to generating discussion. :-(
Beat me to it!...Cheers. That little clip against Bell demonstrated some very good defense. Really liked how he slipped the jabs and rolled with the right hands...LaMotta was definitely a thinking fighter.
No, no, Graham really was untouchable russell.Right up until Julian Jackson knocked him out no one really knew how he would take a punch on the chin.
