Ha Ha ha Ha ha!!! Dudes! If Hopkins himself thought he won or was winning why did he fake injury twice? If a man knows he's winning he wouldn't bother but the simple fact is he faked to steal a fight he knew he was loosing. And he was in the ring - not you :good
i was at the fight and had joe winning 116-113. i was going to score it again watching it on tv but i only made it a few rounds in before i had to turn it off. both fighters should have been dq'ed for such a crappy fight.
I agree with the sentiment but I had Calzaghe edging it. Awful fight. Hopkins looked like a guy with skills and no stamina, Calzaghe looked like a guy with stamina and no skills. Obviously, its not the case, but it certainly looked like on that night.
I don't think it was a bad fight at all - on the contrary. Obviously horrible to watch on a pure entertainment value scale but the fighters were really, really good. Hopkins just didn't magically transform into a world-beater against Pavlik. You could see that this was two quality operators - Hopkins was masterful in the beginning and then Calzaghe showed intelligent pressure - and this is one of the more significant fights of the last decade because of the high status both fighters had/have. Matt McGrain (I believe it was) wrote an excellent article about the fight some time ago. In it, the footwork, the subtle battle of distance and the adaptability of both fighters were brought up to discussion. In the first four rounds, Joe is a tiny bit too close to Bernard which makes him walk into his right. After that, the right isn't as prominent and Cazaghe sweeps almost all of the remaining rounds (except the tenth). When Bernard tries to counter, he has to reach a bit too much. The opportunities are much fewer than in the previous rounds. He looks inactive but I don't think he had much of a choice. 9-3 Calzaghe. Just like in Dirrell-Froch, some razor-thin rounds. This is NOT a reflection on the fight because it was very close. I just think Joe did just a little bit more because after the fourth - Bernard didn't do much at all. And as for the seventh round, which I regurarly see gets scored for Bernard, I don't agree with that at all. Joe controlled that round very well until Bernard made him get off-balance in the last twenty seconds with a good right. Joe wasn't hurt at all and this isn't enough to give someone a round.
Why the hell didn't Bernard use them enough? They were there was he just too worried about his stamina?
This is true. We have a thread on scoring right now. One of the things I mentioned is that "work rate" is not a criteria for awarding rounds.
I scored it for Calzaghe 114-113. Too close to call but B-HOP let it go away as Calzaghe set the pace in the 2nd half.
