    Emanuel Steward Rips Manny Pacquiao’s Trainer Freddie Roach

Roach was asked if he would take a Miguel Cotto rematch now that he has a new trainer in Emanuel Steward and Roach confidently stated that having Steward in Cotto’s corner wouldn’t “make a damn bit of difference” in a rematch and Roach further said, “I would take another Cotto fight even with Steward in his corner in a heartbeat because it was that easy.”

    Steward also laughed at Roach’s statement defending the choice of controversial boxer Antonio Margarito

    “Come on that’s a joke,” says Emanuel Steward on Roach’s reasoning, “he’s just saying whatever Bob Arum [chief of Top Rank Boxing] wants him to say.”

    “He needs to be a trainer. Lately he’s [Freddie Roach] been saying things [out of character] that don’t sound like him; now its just like he thinks of the big paydays.” Steward told Fight Chronicles.

    Steward believes Roach has lost his way as a boxing trainer and is acting more like a promoter or hype man. Steward believes that Roach is only in it for the big paydays now and not what is ethically fair and right.

    “People need to remember when they are trainers. I know I do. He needs to think about the fights and what is fair and right and stop chasing paydays because now he’s (just) following through with what he is being told to say.”

    Disagree. Roach is a character and characters adds excitement.

    Both great trainers but I dont think Roach meant any disrespect by saying that. I think he once said that if he (Roach) trained Cotto Manny would still knock Cotto out...

    Same, Emmanuel is just upset at what Freddie said about Cotto. Emmanuel needs to be a trainer, not a critic.

    agreed, roach used to be a very likeable person when he never spoke much, it was after de la hoya-pac roach became an ass.

    maybe steward is bitter because he used to be the guy everyone wanted in the corner,and now a lot of fighters are using Roach o train hem:

    steward isn't bitter at all, he has enough fighters in his stable and there are always people wanting to train with him, he turns people down because he cant commit to as many people these days.

    Next thing you know someone makes a poster with, "Roach vs Steward"lol. I don't see a problem with what Roach said he just feels Pacquiao would still beat him again in a one-sided fashion and Manny Steward in Cotto's corner can't change that which I agree with.

    I think Steward is pretty spot on....

    The nail in the coffin is Roachs view on margarito before, and after they signed to fight him. Pretty much says it all right there.

    However, Roach's opinions on a rematch with Cotto i believe are genuine, and might possibly be true (meaning it might be the same even with Steward in Cottos corner), ive got no problems with that. Its just that outside of fight predecitions, Roach has become nothing more then seemingly another jaded, shallow dollar chaser, to the point that he goes against his own principles (like saying margarito should never be allowed to fight again, then allowing him to get the biggest payday in boxing super middle and below just about)

    I dont get this.

    What do you expect Roach to say? Yea, everyone dont watch Manny's next fight cos Margo is a cheater.

    He didnt pick Margarito, Arum/Pac did and Roach is supporting that decision. Which he should.

    Its quite simple ,and easy man, just say

    "Im against this fight, but since this is the fight that was chosen, im going to put my all into getting manny ready to beat Margaritos ass, that crimindal shouldnt even be fighting, but he poses a situation manny has never delt with in the ring before as he will be the biggest fighter pac has fought, so it will be interesting how this fight unfolds'

    not bending over backwards, going against his word and 'supposed principles' especially as an ex fighter, and talking this fight up and down all of a sudden as such a legit fight.

    There is no way that Steward is bitter about Roach. He has trained many, many great fighters. He also trains the best heavyweight in the world.

    I think that Steward has a right to be upset at what Roach said. It is one thing to say that he believes Pacquiao beats Cotto again. But he said it in a very insulting way. Steward is Cotto's trainer. How else is he supposed to react?
