Found this report (by Chris Kempson and Glynn Evans) in a Boxing Outlook huh, I brought it, but for the life of me I cannot remember this magazine...). The 1992 ABA Final for Light Middleweights: Welsh Southpaw Joe Calzaghe won his second ABA title in a row, this time at Light Middleweight, as he stopped an outgunned Glen Catley after 2:40 of the final round. The stylish Calzaghe dominated throughout jabbing well, using both hands to the head and softening up Catley with some stiff body shots. By the middle round Catley had very little to offer and a nose bleed followed by a public warning for holding did not help his cause. Calzaghe maintained the pressure again in the third round and a left to the head hurt Catley and when two more strong rights to the head followed, the referee had seen enough.
Pretty sure the fight is on youtube as well. And I never realised Glenn Catley actually became a world champion as a pro Why did him and Calzaghe never fight as pro's?
They just went different routes. Can't be many fighters that this happened to though. He won his title (against marcus beyer) with a 12th round TKO and then lost in his next fight by 12th round KO (in a fight he was winning) to Thobela. He had 3 WBC title shots winning one. He lost the other two to Richie woodhall and Eric Lucas.
In his 11th fight he TKO'd Kirkland Laing in the 5th round. Have to admit not a boxer I know a huge amont about I've just looked it up. I knew that he won the title by 12th round stoppage of Beyer and that he faught woodhall but that was about it.
Great entertaining fighter Glenn Catley. Inspiring performance to take the British title from a favoured Neville Brown, as well as KO'ing Beyer in Germany for the WBC title. A good honest pro. Well worth seeking out his war with Paul Wesley - what a fight!
I'm sure that Joe said in his autobiography that he did a bit of a job on him in sparring too and that Catley's team wanted nothing to do with him as regards a real fight. Don't think I've dreamt this and sure somebody else will be able to verify.
Glenn Catley is a Bristol Boy who always gave 100%, never the greatest boxer but I had the chance to see him box a couple of times always a tryer met him once too and a good bloke,works now as a hypnotherapist with sports people but whos this Calzaghe geezer ,never heard much about him,was he ever on TV boxing???:hey:hey:good
Catley was a tough lad who got his just desserts and got his World Title...:yep Fair play to Ritchie Woodhall in his post fight interview, a man of integrity and humility...:deal
