I slightly disagree with Darien on this. Of course we can argue all day whether he is a "hero" or not, but surely he is one of the best known sportsmen in Hungary.

I can't figure out why Tarver or Dawson doesn't fight him. Tarver can get a belt back and Dawson could unify and perhaps use that to get bigger fights down the road. I'd like to see him against some good opposition.

Had he been a german fighter he could sell bigger fights (i.e. promoters would be ready to invest more $$$).

I never said that is the only problem.

    I am not so sure.

Seems to be a bit harsh conclusion regarding an amateur Europian champion, World champion, Olympic bronze medalist and pro belt holder boxer.
Yet, I have to say his current behaviour seems to support this conclusion.

Yeah, sounds a bit silly I agree, but I am sure that for him it was "legendary" ;)

Because IMO this is one of the main reasons why he is unlikely to leave UNI.

To be honest I do not think that he has any claims to fame other than being the first hungarian pro fighter defending his belt (which ofc amounts to very little outside of hungary).

These are not excuses, I just tried to explain the situation the best I can. As I said I am not happy with the latest choice of opponents either.

Angel of Mercy isn't Arthur Abraham a fighter not from Germany? He's a known fighter and he gets big $$ for his fights. Despite the fact he hasn't fought Taylor or Pavlik he at least expressed interest. The LHW division isn't as popular as the MW division right now, so it shouldn't be hard to unify with the other top opponents. The fact is, he hasn't fought anyone in the top 10 for the last 3 years. He hasn't shown any interest in fighting guys like Glen Johnson or Clinton Woods, but continues to fight medicore opponents only in Germany. He's a protected fighter like Stripe Drews, (a fighter who was suppose to fight Dawson but pulled out) I would love for him to fight Dawson so he can get his ass kicked.

    Two things:
    1. Arthur Abraham is a fighter from Armenia who's become a German citizen and fights under the German flag, while Erdei never changed his nationality. He's also a much more interesting and crowd-pleaser type of fighter.

    2. A.A. has a different promoter - he's with Sauerland who seems to be much less cautious when choosing opponents.

The other guy's had DONE MORE.

Hopkins beat Tarver and Wright and those fights were about $$$$ and legacy. Erdei's resume doesnt compare. His claim to fame is s "Linnear" title which IN TODAYS BOXING REALITY, is TOILET PAPER:good

So Erdei has MORE TO PROVE and the only way he gets it is by pursuing it. Yes it works both ways and IF ERDEI WENT AFTER IT? One of the top names should fight him.

Thats why that INTERVIEW sucks ass:good Zsolt took himself immediately out of any such scenario.:-( :-( :-( :-(

Today version of Tarver loses badly to Erdei, it wouldn't be even close

Actually I recall Adamek calling him out in at least two interviews after KOing Ulrich. There was no answer from Erdei or Universum.

And Dawson did as well, though he wasn't as specific as Adamek, simply calling out "all the beltholders" and not Erdei in particular.

I agree about his skills. He was great to watch a few years back. Even last year we saw Erdei in his prime, imo, and he was a world class technician. But what irks me is that most fighters in his shoes (see Calzaghe, Michalczewski) become MORE demanding about having a big fight when they go through a stretch of weak opponents. They start calling the opponents out by name, and demanding the big fights...Erdei meanwhile seems to have grown content with what is happening in his career (or at least doesn't bother voicing any displeasure).

Can't really argue with that. I agree, he should be more demanding about big fights but it seems it's not his style. I remember him saying something like this once: "I'm a fighter, my job is to train hard and fight whomever my promoter wants me to fight."

About that Adamek thing: yes, Adamek called out all the other beltholders. I've read that open letter thing. But do you have any information about any real offer? Because anyone can write a letter, but making a real offer is a different thing. If he really wanted to fight Erdei, why didn't his promoter (it was King at that time, right?) seek out Kohl? Or did he? I don't have any information about that. Fighters fight but promoters make fights. I don't know why people (even intelligent posters like you) put so much weight in open letters and interviews. You know that professional boxing doesn't work like that. It's not like when you call out a punk in the local pub to settle your disagreement. It's hardcore business.

I'm not quite sure, to be honest. I know King negotiated with Tarver, Johnson, Jones, and later Woods.

And actually interviews and open letters can have great results. For example Glen Johnson did an interview at BTalk saying nobody wants to fight him and called out the entire division. Adamek's people read it and soon Adamek was on Btalk doing an interview saying he would fight Johnson.

Then negotiations began, but were eventually ruined by King's involvement (he is a greedy ******* just like Kohl, after all). Though the fight was almost a done deal (Showtime in fact gave them a fight date) just through a simple interview.

On Tarver and Jones, I suspect there's some mutuality there. Erdei and his promoters don't want to put him against anyone dangerous, and Jones/Tarver know they're the bigger names and have too much ego to travel to Germany or receive less than 50% of a purse.

However, that said, Erdei SHOULD be willing to head stateside for a 40% cut to fight either of those guys. Either one would be both the biggest purse of his career and the biggest scalp of his career. Either way, if he's willing to concede that those guys are the bigger draws (which they are) and treat the pay situation as such, then they're fights he would easily be able to make, and which would probably increase his earning potential since a win over either one would make his a name in a huge market where he's currently barely known.

    Zsolt Erdei another Sven Ottke?
    You must be joking,mate!

I am not posting here in this thread to blow the German's trumpet, but he defended his title numerous times against decent opposition. He wasnt a feast for eyes.Quite the opposite any casual box fan got bored silly watching his lame title defences. However,as close as some of victories were he did beat some good names in his career.Besides he was a fairly active fighter.
Erdei another Ottke? Nope! He has the talent to beat quite a lot of his better known rivals out there, but his promoter's matchmaking has been horrible for the last 2 years and Erdei has put his signature under the contracts.
I dont want to sound too harsh on him as I am aware that the name of this game is money and that unnecessary risks should be avoided, but I dont get it why the hell his promoter doesnt take a calculated risk and signs up some better names for the Hungarian.
Clinton Woods, and Glen Johnson dont pose extremely dangerous threats to Erdei who for sure must be called the favourite against those two aforementioned names.Mendoza? Why the hell Mendoza?
Axe is right in saying that the Hungarian wastes his god-given talent and his precious prime time on undeserving opponents.
A real shame as Erdei has the potential to be a truly big player at lighe heavy!

I've just read an article in German about Erdei in which he says that he wants to fight a top fighter in the USA. He talks about many other things including his next fight with Mendoza, Michalczewski's return and his stablemate and compatriot Károly Balzsay. Here's the link for those of you who know some German:

Balzsay is really good - not as accurate as Zsolt but more of a power puncher...hpefully eh's served better opposition than his compatriot...
