Was Dempsey really 'ruined' or was he just exposed by far the best boxer he ever faced

I don't see how Gibbons can be rated near to Tunney, Given Greb schooled Gibbons and Tunney beat Greb over a series

It seems pretty clear Tunney was by far the best Dempsey ever faced

 

Against who? An farmboy ancient strongman Willard? A weight lifter none boxer Firpo? Opponents coming off to 1 sided loses to the no1 MW of the time?

Was a colour line drawn? Yes, fact.

Have blacks dominated the sport since the colour began creeping away? Yes, fact.

Did Langford and Johnson still manage to prove themselves to be the two best fighters of their times, despite being severly impeded in their careers by racist white America? Yes, fact.

So why is this not to be brought up? Is it not a major factor? How the hell can you call it reverse racism:blood

 

We are the boxing fans, who never got to see a prime Dempsey against the elite. Any argument of how he does against the elite is speculation as it never happened.

Spinks did throw and was countered when he did against Tyson. HE was throwing when he got ko'd if I remember rightly

 

Well, he would be almost unique in boxing history to be able to come straight off such extended layoffs and still resemble his prime condition that was 5 - 8 years earlier.
I mean, common sense dictates that he had deteriorated. Even in terms of age alone, it would be unusual for a 31 year-old of his style to retain anything like the speed and reflexes he had at 24 or 35, and the problem is magnified many times by the inactivity.

Dempsey was expected to beat Tunney on sheer power and reputation. Tunney was grossly underrated ....

Well, Tunney was underrated.
Tunney might have beat Greb over a series, but Gibbons fought Greb 4 times before Tunney ever fought him. And Gibbons beat Greb twice out of four.
It's true Greb got the better of Gibbons around the time Gibbons faced Dempsey, but maybe Tunney was fortunate that Greb was aging as the series progressed.
I think Tunney was better than Gibbons, but Gibbons was no more a "cherry pick" than Tunney.

Making the washed-up rusty old Dempsey's loss even more understandable. :good

 

PS - Only really the champ of North America?? Dempsey fought defended against Carp - a frenchman - or am i missing something ?? Was he really just a north american pretending to be french?? Also Firpo - argentine - is that not South America??

Thats funny because in the early days it was on the whole dominated by Irish-Americans, in the 30's it was on the whole dominated by jewish fighters, in the fifties it was generally dominated by italian americans - the 80's may have been dominated to a certain extent by black americans (??), there has also been much hispanic fighters on the rise in the 90's, and mexicans, now the sport seems on the whole to be dominated by eastern block/eastern europeans?? Have I been following a strange parrallel universe history for the past hundred years??
