Couture made a good point last night. He said Toney prepared for 9 mths for this fight, and that there is no way he could learn enough to be adequately prepared for a truee MMA fighter. Imagine for a moment, that a top notch MMA fighter prepares for a bout against a really good boxer. Now, make them fight using boxing rules. And make the fight with one of boxing`s elite champions. Would it even last a round??? Comparing the two sports is ridiculous, it`s like apples and oranges. Not to mention that now the MMA crowd will go around crowing that there sport won, and that they are superior. Couture beat an old, way overweight out of shape Toney, who in truth is not anywhere close to being the special fighter he once was...
Boxer fights an MMa fighter, at his game on the ground ? No contest. Give me ANY heavyweight MMA fighter, put gloves on him, have them stand up and fight A prime Mike Tyson . I go absolutley NUTS when anyone starts with the comparsions of punching power... It`s not even in the ballpark...I am talking about true, concussive one punch KO power.
So if Toney chased down roger federer and lost in a tennis match all respect to federer for beating a boxer in tennis? Everyone pretty much knew Toney was gonna get taken down. I put down £40 on Couture by submission last night, only reason I didnt put more is because he might have done it by tko gnp. Toney had a punchers chance, but Couture didnt waste any time standing up. Fair enough.
this reminds me of those videos online where a guy is bouncing around acting all bad and then proceeds to get ktfo or the one with a guy talking smack to a big old girl who proceeds to beat the livin **** out of him, lol + seriously, it's a different game with different (many, many more) weapons, imho a boxer will lose 99 times out of a hundred and I'm a huge boxing fan. This doesn't take away from either sport, it's just not apples to apples. BTW, the same is true of MMA in the boxing ring, the MMA will lose almost every time.
Randy Catoure answered the two most important questions himself in the post fight interview. Rogan: Were you surprised it wasnt more competitive? Catoure: We thought the leg would be open in that boxing stance, and it was, so I took it. Which tells you: 1. Why MMA punches are weak: They can't use proper boxing stance because its "take down vulnerable". 2. Why most fighters from either sport couldnt be effective switching back and forth: There are not many techniques that cross over. Everything about the technique, from the stance up, is different. That being said, Toney had about as much chance of outwrestling Randy as Randy does winning a 10 rnd UD or KO'ing any currently relevant world class boxer.....or even a past it guy like Toney. Toney ahould have fought a slugging brawler, like Kimbo, instead. He would beat Kimbo probably. Him going in with Randy was intentionally a giant mismatch. It would be like Randy taking on Adamek in his boxing debut. No way Randy wins that.
Excactly, I don't think anyone learned anything new from this fight. It just proves that the sports don't mix that well. A top boxer can't pick up MMA from scratch and in just 8 months beat a top MMA guy and the same goes for a top MMA guy fighting a top boxer in boxing. I wish people would stop with this MMA v Boxing rivalry, both sports can co-exist comfortably without fans bickering over which is best. It's just a matter of taste.
the thing is, Toney is not a top boxer anymore. So although what you said might be true, last night's fight didn't prove it. And considering Toney weighed in at 20lbs higher than his last fight, I don't think we can hold him to his word that he's been training seriously for 8 months. I think that might have been a career high weight for Toney.
all last night proved was that you can take an overweight well past his prime middleweight boxer and put him in a MMA event and he will tap out after rolling about on the floor like a tortoise onits back for 5 minutes. Saying that if you threw some boxing glove on Randy Couture and threw him in the ring with Vitali Klitschko you would see Couture get knocked out within a round. If they are gonna do MMA/boxing mix match ups in the future then they shoulkd at least put the boxersa in with some one with a poor record and let them build up to big fights (and vice versa). I do think it would be interesting to see if the UFC would take a gamble and put say Brock Lesnar (there champion) in with a big strong boxer with knockout power (say someone like Shannon Briggs) and take the chance of there champion getting brutally KOd. The Toney/Couture fight was all in there favour although it probably didnt help transfer many fans over to MMA as the overall card was pretty boring
Couture loses respect and his stock continues to plummet after last night. ****** went for a take down and was trying against someone with 0 MMA experience. LOL @ dumbasses who paid for that **** fight.
I agree with the general theme of your post but people will always be intrigued by "what ifs" when we are dealing with two sports that are soo similar despite some major differences. It's very similar to the Rugby League-Rugby Union show down between Wigan and Bath from a few years ago...This ,again, was a situation where two sports(or codes within the same sport) with different rules but very similar mechanics squared off to find out which code would come out on top. Ultimately, I think these kinds of situations are inevitable and...healthy.
I gave James a shot! I honestly believed that James who have a chance on his feet and I still do but Randy is a true professional. He didn't give James ANY SHOT at his strength! He completely took that away from him as soon as Randy had his opening for the one leg take down and like everyone thought.....It was over at that moment. James was a fish out of water on the ground. he didn't have any knowledge of the proper way to defend against the arm triangle and didn't know how to position himself on the ground to bet away from Randy. Major props to the Natural....he's a great fighter without question and he absolutely WELCOMED James to MMA last night. I'm interested to see what James has to say and what his next move will be regarding his "MMA career". I do give James props for stepping up to the plate against Randy.....it was a very arrogant move to make on his part.
This is flat out incorrect and anyone who knows anything about the origins of MMA knows it is incorrect. Grapplers were winning way back before MMA looks like it does now, too. MMA may not be "real fighting" but it is a clear, reliable indicator as to who would win in a real fight (especially japanese MMA, and early MMA).
Oh ****.... here we go again.:rofl:rofl Please explain to me... when was the last time that you did this in a fight, Kirk? As I explained in the other thread.... you know damn well that pretty much NEVER happens. And if you "gouged someone's eyes out" or "fishhooked their cheek off their face".... you would be spending 20 to life in prison for aggravated malicious wounding. WHICH IS WHY IT NEVER ****ING HAPPENS!! I hope to god that you wouldn't be dumb enough to spend the rest of your life in prison just because you can't take an ass whoopin. When someone is on top of you pounding your face in... you really aren't in the position to do that **** anyways. You are SADLY misktaken if you honestly think that the science to fighting in MMA can't be applied in the street. That is absolutely ******ed. PS... to reply to this.. How the **** are you going to eye gouge or fish hook someone who has you in a triangle choke? You realize that is ****ing impossible due to positioning don't you? If you want to talk silly... the more realistic thing that could happen in that position is that you would be choked unconcious very quickly... and then he could proceed to smack you in the face with his ****, take pictures and upload them to facebook, or ass **** you if he wanted while you were out. All of this is pretty stupid isn't it? Exactly... because none of that **** is going to happen either.
toney was a fool for thinking he could jump in into another sport like mma and have instant success. stuff like that takes years to perfect, juts like boxing. you cant put a doctor in a court room and expect him to be a great lawyer.
