I'd be interested to know if anyone in this forum has read Teddy Baldock The Pride of Poplar? I am Teddy's grandson so provided Brian Belton the author with all the material for the book, you may already know that my grandfather died penniless after living rough on the streets of London, so my mother had very little in the way of material charting her father's career. I spent many hours in Newspaper Libraries gathering information, which was really for my own interest due to my passion for the sport. The book mainly covers my grandfather's career as a professional fighter, I would liked to have included more about his personnel after he had retired from boxing but because there was nobody still alive to interview the information was very scarce.
The book is well illustrated and I'm sure would be enjoyed by anyone interested in the British fight scene during the 1920/30's. If interested my website is www.teddybaldock.co.uk

 

Welcome to the forum, I have seen the book and would like to get round to reading it but I've got so many still to read I think the missus would go spare if I bought another one.

Thats a great site and tribute to your grandfather, any luck tracking his championship belt down?

 

He got a notch on the Lonsdale NSC Challenge Belt that Dick Corbett won outright. The belt came up for auction about 20 years ago and was bought by a scrap metal merchant in Wolverhampton. He later sold the Dick Corbett belt along with Jimmy Wildes Belt but the individual he says he sold the belts to states that he only bought Jimmy Wilde's so the Dick Corbett belt is now missing. I'm hoping that it may surface in the future. It s tragic that one of these original NSC Challenge Belts has disappeared.

Pennant Books is bringing out my book in softback around November, you might be able to ask your wife to get for you for Christmas! I have written an epilogue covering my grandfather's trip to America in 1929 to fight Al Brown.

So much of Boxings history has gone missing throughout the years, the wherebouts of countless key pieces belonging to some of the most famous fighters remains unknown:-(

 

Just finished war baby on holiday which I enjoyed, now reading hands of stone. Also read becoming Holyfield earlier which I enjoyed" not many other people did though!!

 

Dark Trade and Years of the Locust are the best boxing reads I've come across. Just got hold of This Bloody Mary is the Last Thing I Own, which I hear is good, so will probably attack that next.

Got recommended a book by someone on here not long ago - I swear it was Black Lights, but can't be sure. will probably get it anyway.

But isn't boxing just an amazing sport? So many stories. Unparalleled really, in that I can't think of any other sport that'd lend itself to so many decent books.

 

You can get ron lyles book on amazon, its called "off the ropes, the ron lyle story" i haven't read it but its next on the list. just got ken norton an tommy hearns books myself
