Boxing, Muay Thai, Wrestling, BJJ and Judo. I do think TKD, Karate and other martial arts are effective but only amongst the ultra talented like GSP, Silva and Cung Le who can pull off such dynamic kicks.
you don't need to know bjj, tou need to know submission. This content is protected This content is protected
It's really just a swing, it happens all the time. BJJ still wins plenty of fights, but lost a few high end ones. Werdum did just use textbook BJJ to beat Fedor right?
Absolutely. Maia made a name for himself exclusively on BJJ. If anything that should be an indication enough. No other single martial art has done that in recent years with exception of Wrestling + Gorilla strength in Brock Lesnar.
You're not gonna find a Sambo competitor who hasn't also done Judo. The differences in the sports in places like Russia is next to nothing; same guys just slightly different rules.
Yeah pretty much what i thought they would be. Call me crazy but as far as standup even though its more limited i think boxing is a bit more effective than muay thai. I feel boxing teaches the better footwork and defensive manuevers than muay thai. Although if you do both obviously your deadly. Despite its effectiveness i hate wrestling with a passion yet love BJJ.
True, great points, but think about this. How long was anderson getting pounded before the submission? Fedor just got caught, hes easily avoided that submission many times prior. I didn't watch the lesner fight so I can't really comment. I think as the game continues to evolve, bjj is going to get pretty useless, aside from basic submissions and certain positions, most of it is largely irrelevant and useless. Makes me pretty sad, as I cannot stand wrestling in any way shape or form.
BJJ sometimes cant keep opponents honest anymore. I noticed that the new gens like Edgar just dives into a guard and feel safe there. Like Saturday, he took BJ down (one of the best JJ in MMA), calmly stayed into BJs guard and dropped some elbows like nothin. Its almost like "get that **** outta here". One of these days, even with Maia in one of those flapping instances, someones going to willingly follow him into his guard and pound him out.
Sambo incorporates quite a bit of Judo. When you think of Sambo, you think of a version of mixed martial arts in itself, or a set of parameters of things allowed.. So, when I say you could consider Fedor's base Judo, I mean you probably should consider his base Judo. When you ask, is he Sambo or Judo, I say Sambo.. Its kind of like asking if Ozzie Smith was a baseball player or a shortstop.. He's both, but he wasn't JUST a shortstop. He was a baseball player. Fedor's sambo style heavily incorporates a Judo base.
Ya, thats where teh sport is headed. Earlier in the sport, when it was still young, bjj owned everything, but everyones caught onto it now. I think in the future, what we will see is wrestling+boxing+muay thai+basic bjj knowledge. Having a black belt in bjj will be as useful and as much of a big deal as having a blackbelt in thai chi.
I concur. It will be mostly prevent JJ. I pretty much had it in the right order. I mean look at Edgars boxing last night, I mean that left a good striker like BJ beffudled. When you have boxing and wrestling to go along with it. Its pretty scary. And whos going to beat Edgar? most likely Maynard (very good wrestler). You also notice that some of these black belt JJ guys like Silva, BJ, Jacare. They dont even use their BJJ anymore because the probability of subbing someone isnt in their favor as much as knocking someone out.
IMO no discipline is better then the other, its just who is best at what THEY do. Sure you need to know about all facets and multi disciplines. But the fighters who are winning fights are just better at THEIR discipline and stick to their gameplan and strengths. In a few years you might see all champs are BJJ blackbelts and thats their discipline, or they could all be Karate (probably unlikely) just because they are simply better at what they do. Although this forum may not like it, but u can make reference to the boxing theory of "rock, paper, scissors" each style has advantages over another.
