When I was just getting interested in boxing my dad told me that one of his favorites to watch was always Danny Lopez. He loved how he would get decked early (like against Olivares) and fight his way back to a victory. As my dad said, he wasn't the slickest or most skilled guy in the world, but he could fight like hell.
Not true at all ive seen him knock dudes out with very very short punches. In fact thats one of the reasons he was my dads favorite fighter. My dad goes on and on about Lopez talent to knock dudes out with punches that looked like short taps.
I agree with both of your points, but Sanchez does create a sticking point, and so does Chacon. Danny lost to the two best fighters he ever faced. You'd be hard pressed to find a bigger Little Red fan than your's truly, but I just can't bring myself to call him an all time great. Hall of Fame? Absolutely! He belongs there. ATG? Nope.
The 1979 SI cover story in connection with booradley's classic avatar touches on the experience of that journey in three rather restrained paragraphs, starting with the second paragraph from the bottom of page 2, and concluding with the opening paragraph on page 3: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1094606/2/index.htm http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1094606/3/index.htm Elsewhere, that room he was dumped in was described as a place where sleeping was done with one eye open for cockroaches and other vermin. He didn't exactly experience a hospitable event in Accra.
One of the biggest punchers in featherweight history and one of the most exciting fighters ever. BTW i have seen 15 or so of his fights and i dont think i've ever seen him duck a punch.
Very definitely worthy of being in the Hall of Fame, that's for certain. As to an all time ranking, I think you could make a case for say, 20-25 other featherweight being ranked above him, but that's more a case of featherweight being a very deep division, rather than any real indictment of Lopez's abilty. In any case, Lopez was an all-galaxy puncher, who was involved in some of the most exciting fights that I've ever witnessed. And, like some other fighters who are my favorites, I think that trumps any discussion of all time ranking and head to head abilty.
I agree with everything you said(almost) and its a shame he had to wait so long to get in the IBHOF. But 20-25 is too low Danny was easily top 15 (i have him 12). I am well aware of how deep the FW history is,but Danny was king for a few years and back then was on everyones all time top 10 FW list.
One of the most exciting feathers ever. A truly great banger and iron chinned despite the knockdowns. Head to head a great chance even against fighters that might be favoured over him.
