Too much common sense involved for the average boxing fan.

The more weight he takes off, the less weight he puts on. If he were allowed to weight in at 154, then ****...he'd come in around 164-165 come fight time. That's just insane given Pac's size.

that's why weight limits are the best. the premise of making weight is ******ed anyway. Fighters HAVE to weigh the same on weight day, but on fight day, they can come in whatever weight they want. that makes no sense really from a rules point of view.

Who gives a damn? Rules shouldn't be bent just for emmanuel. If he's too small then he should stay at 147.

Exactly my point. What's the point of making weight if come fight time, you're going to be fighting 1-2 weight classes above the sanctioned weight? This sport is all screwed up!

I don't think it's considered "irrelevant" to Manny's camp. Obviously they wouldn't ask for it if it were. Manny being at a very extreme phsyical disadvantage and not having time to acclimate to yet anther weight division seems to be looking at testing the waters....gradually allowing his body to adjust to the new routine and weight. I think PAC would be fine at 154....but I'm not PAC or the people who ensure PAC's safety as a fighter.

Rules aren't being bent for any catch weight fights. They weren't bent in the golden era...they aren't now. This is actually a common practice in boxing.

    1. This is only true if Margarito put on muscle mass.
    2. You said it yourself, the catch-weight is to ensure that Margarito is not able to be at his optimum weight/comfort zone/energy level (whichever). All I'm saying is that if Pac wants a JMW title, fight it @ 154 like every other boxer in the history of the sport has. If you think that guy is too big, then don't fight him. Simple as that.

a catchweight between a guy with one fight at 154 and a guy with no fights at 154 for a vacant title at 154 is common?

Many people are saying that the catchweight is irrelevant, so I was responding to them. Its mere existence is proof that someone in Manny's camp thinks it matters. I don't have a problem with a catchweight fight, but I do have a big problem with making them for titles. I'll always have asterisks on Manny's WW and JMW titles, which is a shame because I think he'd be able to beat these guys without these advantages.

marg isn't a challenge at this stage of his career. If emmanuel wants to go fight big monsters try Williams and Martinez.

If I'm not mistaken, only DLH (against Hopkins) actually fought for a title at a catchweight among those people. Leonard's fight against Lalonde was shady, too, actually. Either way, fighting for titles at catchweight is not common practice and should not even be sanctioned, IMO.

I know the titles are worthless anyway so I shouldn't even care, but if you're going to say a guy has titles in the most weight classes of all time (which I doubt will ever be broken), then let's not have asterisks on that record.

BTW, Margarito is not moving up in weight. He's fought @ junior middle before and it's been a long time since the Mosley fight. Even then, there were people saying that he was enjoying his Cotto victory too much and found the weight hard to make.

Floyd beat DLH for the belt. That "legit champion", DLH at the time, defeated Ricardo mayorga for the belt. Yes, DLH, who had not won at 154 since defeating *groan* Yory Boy 3 years prior fought for the title.

And Mayorga fought for the vacant belt beating Piccarilo, despite NO SIGNIFICANT WINS AT 154 at all.

Doesn't sound all that different from the current situation, minus a catchweight.
